That was my mistake... the game was set to be released on May 20th all along, and I just cot my dates mixed up. The game, by the way, is doing great:

My thoughts on the game here: http://gbgames.com/blog/2009/05/plants-vs-zombies-how-did-popcap-do-it/

Also, Tod Semple, the programmer, responded to some of my questions on that blog post.

I think I got a different experience when it came to the demo. I was running it through Wine on my Ubuntu system, and instead of cutting me off after the hour was up, it paused the game. Apparently the window telling me that the trial was over popped up, but the game itself was not shutdown or anything. I didn't even know that an hour had gone by. I unpaused the game, wondering why it paused in the first place, and kept playing for much longer than an hour. It wasn't until after my blog post was written and published the next morning that I realized I shouldn't have had multiple hours pass me by without me noticing. It seems I inadvertently circumvented the one hour lock by using Ubuntu/Wine. B-)

Thinking back, I can see how the demo might not get people interested since not nearly enough happens in the hour. That said, the ease of playing it was perfect. Players will feel accomplished, and the humor and variety keeps you playing. I think I had one level in which zombies almost made it all the way across. The lawnmowers saved me on that one.

..so the game was placed in the bargain bin when sales figures wernt disappointing? That's gotta be disappointing.
