My name is Matthew Rock and writing music is my passion. I grew up playing games on the Master System, SNES and N64 and this has strongly influenced the music I write today. I have always been fascinated by game music and what an important role it plays in creating a fun and memorable experience. Being a part of that process is nothing short of a childhood dream made real and I love what I do. I wouldn't trade it for any other job.

Whether you need strong, memorable melodies or mood-setting ambient tracks, I will work closely with you to create the perfect audio accompaniment to your project. I write in a variety of styles, from chiptune to orchestral and anywhere in between. I have also worked on music and sound design for an upcoming animated short film. Please take a listen at my soundcloud below for game soundtracks I have worked on and portfolio pieces that showcase a variety of styles:

NES style soundtrack for an upcoming two-button projectile based fighter.

Synth/orchestral tracks for an unreleased action RPG project including a variety of action and ambience.

Donkey Kong Country inspired track, tropical with ambient vibes.

Goofy, upbeat battle theme. Most instruments are sampled from Earthbound and Mother 3.

Boss battle in a haunted mansion, a DnB chiptune hybrid.

A song I wrote after playing Nights into Dreams, heavy use of the M1 and Wavestation synths.

Small collection of battle and menu SFX for use in an RPG.

Some testimonials from developers I have worked with:

"Matthew is a great communicator, an amazing composer and SFX designer, and a true professional. I worked with him on a single player arena brawler. He provided some great tracks that fit both the art style and narrative of the game. He also created some rich SFX that really resonated with players! 100% recommended. Can't wait to work with him again." - Andrew Howizon

"Matthew is an expert in his field. He always delivered on point and it was a pleasure to work with him. I will definitely work with him again for future projects." - Orhan Keskin

"Matt is a well-experienced game composer who we worked with on one of our future releases. He is very prompt and finished the game even before the commercial release. I highly recommend Matt because he is not only fun to work with but his background and skills will be an asset to your team." - April Poland, Lamina Studios

"His work far exceeded my expectations, he worked quickly, and was always willing to change up what he did based on my intention for the track! Would absolutely recommend this dude and hope to work with him again! Honestly the most talented musician I've come across!" - Conor Garity, Nobody's Games

My rates are negotiable so whatever your project's budget may be, we can work something out. I will provide regular work-in-progress updates and I am capable of working to tight deadlines, should you need your audio in a hurry. I am also available for regular skype meetings during the work process. If you like what you hear and you'd be interested in working with me, please don't hesitate to send me an email at matthewrockvgm@outlook.com and I will get back to you promptly. Added a few new tracks to my portfolio!

    Upbeat N64 platformer style track.

Ambient track for a creepy title screen.

Master System tune using SN-EMU, a plugin that emulates the SN76489 chip in the original hardware.

Had lots of fun writing these ones.

Took part in a game jam last month and contributed sound and music to an entry called Wildwood. Very proud of this piece.

Recently had the pleasure of writing a snowy mountain track for This Game is Trash, a game with a really charming stop-motion clay style.
