I find it helpful to list goals in a public forum. Feel free to comment and contribute.

As measurable as possible, my goals for 2008:

    1. Launch 3 casual games in 2008 (2 game released, another one past alpha)
    2. All games on all medium gross over $1,000,000 by 12/31/08 (Not reached, but not too bad)
    3. Submit demo, demo is finalist for IGF (Priority changed, demo never submitted)
    4. Continue to better my relationship with publisher, developers, and freelancers (2008 in good standing, but could improve more)

    Previous years: 2007 2006

My primary goal is to finally complete a game and sell it, either the one I'm working on or the new funny idea I recently came up with. But so far we only released a freeware game, and I just want to launch a new game now to get into business.

Sadly, I had the same goal for 2007

Succeed in negotiating this long complicated publishing contract, get piles of money, and release a hit game.

Finally get the Cute Knight sequel going, and maybe finished.

Hassle my lawyer and the US government to please find their asses and sort out their paperwork already.

    My goals:

    1) Release my first commercial project that I've been working on since August and it's finally nearing completion.
    2) For the next projects don't go too complex with game ideas.
    3) Start and finish at least two more products and release them.
    4) Stop working as a freelancer for good. :)
    5) Finish my university degree :)

    I'll byte.... :)

    In 2008 I will:

    1. Finish coding the Demon Engine (reach 1.0as defined by engine design docs)
    2. Complete the Gecko renderer (*really cool, very different*) Mostly needs pipeline tools work.
    3. Begin Secret Game Projects myself and lend Demon/Gecko to a couple select indies to help them out.
    4. eBay, CraigsList, Sell or Throwaway 85% of my approx 25 cubic meters of 8-bit era video games and computers (do I really need 20 Atari 2600s, 8 Videopac G7400s, 3 Exidy Sorcerers, 5 Atari 520STs, and so much more STUFF I never have time for??) **
    5. Sell house and downsize to approx 1/2 current size
    6. Lose 15Kg

All of these goals seem very obtainable given the current circumstances in my life. #6 may be hardest.

** Numbers are NOT exaggerated for effect. Storage for these resembles a warehouse.

    3. IGF game was stopped but we did something something

Hmm, given my ones for 2007 all COMPLETELY FAILED. I'd hesitate to post here, but here goes:

    1) Admit that I have to work alone if I need anything completing
    2) Scale project accordingly
    3) Pay more for art
    4) Release at least 1 commercial game
    5) Lose weight
    6) Meet more developers and indies
    7) Learn to draw at least characters (unlikely)

Air Ace went in the toilet. Panzer Ace seems to be going the same way. Team fell apart again. I should really learn from this, but it seems I never do.

I should be more cynical and create games that might work commercially. Use the money from a few smaller games to build up an art budget so that each game gets more and more polished.

At some point the level of polish allows me to make a "hit" and we're done :) retire!

    I will:

Do that game that I keep thinking is a really good idea, regardless of the fact that anyone I describe it to thinks I'm mad.

OK, I only listed Indie game development related ones here as I've got quite a few personal goals too.

    In 2008 I will:

    1) Develop 2-3 hit games for Big Fish Games. (Depends on the size of projects we end up choosing)
    2) My games will reach No. 1 in the BFG Top 10 and on other sites too.
    3) One or more of my games will gross $1,000,000. (based on past performance, this is a realistic and achievable target - just need around 100,000 sales)
    4) Start the next big "genre"! (gotta think big ;-))
    5) Meet lots of you at Casuality.
    6) Work on an "action" game as a hobby.
    7) Continue improving my skills and my game framework.
    8) Continue having great fun doing a job that I love!

oops forgot to add affiliate related stuff:

    9) Ramp up affiliate sales from my sites and blogs, via more newsletter subscriptions, more blog posts, more marketing etc.

For those of you who are interested, I've posted a full 2007 summary and 2008 goals on my blog: http://www.greyaliengames.com/blog/ . One thing that's been proven to help people achieve their goals is making them public so they don't "loose face" :)

I'm aiming low, it makes it easier to surpass my goals:

    1. Release my first casual game in early summer.
    2. Release my second casual game in late fall.
    3. Lose weight.
    4. Pay off debt.

    Fun thread.
I like the way SteveZ put comments to his 2007 goals in bold letters. Everyone should do it like this.

    Here my 2008 goals:

    1. Don't give in to my boss's pressure to work more hours at the company.
(Failure: Had to upgrade from 24 to 28 hours/week.)

    2. Don't get fired (see 1.)
    (Success.)

    3. Have my 2nd shareware game in a state so that it can be shown to fellow indies for feedback.
(Failure: Far from having anything that can be shown.)

    4. Start a german games site that makes $50/month with adsense (now we are thinking big...).
    (Success.)
