Hi, I am a visual artist looking to create a 2D modelled world that can be moved through with keyboard commands. I don't need any functionality beyond this, just something that I can design the look of myself. Does anyone have a recommendation for an engine that could help me realize a project like this? Let me know if this makes sense, I am very new to this world and I don't know all the terminology.

    Thanks in advance!

You can just stick to the "old favorites":
For what you want to achieve Godot is pretty good, because it's super newcomer friendly. Or you can just choose Unity which has a lot of online content by the community.
