I was about register a domain name using www.register.com, but a friend of mine pointed out www.godaddy.com. GoDaddy charges $8.95/year whereas www.register.com charges $35... Clearly, I am missing something here. Did anyone else use GoDaddy before? Are they any good? How come there is a big difference?

    Thanks in advance!

My girlfriend does web work all the time and she uses GoDaddy. I've never heard her say anything bad about them...

I own and manage several domains and have been using godaddy very happily for years. I'll tell you what the catch is. They have several partners, and as you go through the process of registering the domain they offer you "deals" from all these partners (all sorts of things like clip art, photo manipulation programs, search engine services, etc.)

So all you do is simply decline them all, and it's just like any other registration service. They don't try and "sneak" things by you or anything, it's all very clear. They just get money from advertising these services through the registration process.

Managing domains, making payments, etc. is all done very well. As I said, I've been very happy with godaddy for years.

    Hope that helps.

    maksum and EpicBoy,

    Thanks for your replies!

One more question. In your opinion, is it worth the extra money to do "private registration" so that personal info is not publicly available? This is my first domain registration, so not very experienced.

    Thanks again!

I highly recommend them! Very easy to use and the price is right.

i just registered through godaddy for the first time, and they are great. i highly recommend them. and i chose the private registration also, because:

    1) my email address(es) and home physical address got spammed.
    2) i sometimes received tech support phone calls to my HOUSE, even though i only offer email support!
    3) peace of mind, no psychopaths can get your home address and come and bother you.

so i recommend the private registration, especially for indie developers.

I'm planning on moving my domains from directnic.com to godaddy myself. I've heard good things, the price is better, and they apparently care a lot about their customers. I didn't know there was a private registration option, so that's cool.

I too have had multiple domains at GoDaddy for years, with absolutely no problems.

They do try to pitch you many extra services when you sign up -- but as people have already pointed out, just decline them and you're fine.

Godaddy rocks and their tools are great. Very straight forward and great for managing multiple domains.

Just a hint - you could edit any information after you buy domain. Enter any information (except billing, which is private by default) while buying and then edit it. That's great.

I use dyndns.com out of conviencnce. I like doing my mail forwarding, DNS, and domain registration all from one place. Also, a lot of netgear routers integrate with dyndns, which is handy for me.
