    Hi Everyone,

I've just joined the forums and hope to add plenty of helpful posts in the future, but to start with it's shameless plug time ;)

Stickman Studios, our first partner on our Blitz 1>UP programme, released Buccaneer on Steam last Friday:
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/23100/

The 2 guys at Stickman (Harvey & Nev) have made a fantastic game with a great non-linear single-player campaign, and then a load of really good multiplayer maps to boot!

Harvey and Nev have done an amazing job and have really gone through the mill in bringing this game to light. What's even more amazing is that their company consists of just the two of them - and they're both artists!

There are more screens here on our flickr page and extra info about the game can be found here: www.pursuitofinfamy.com

A free demo or the full game for $19.99 - if you like plundering or team-based multiplayer action it's well worth trying out :)

Thanks, and I look forward to your feedback,

    Chris.

I bought this game a few days ago when it first came out on steam. For this being an indie game it has LOADS of content. The only thing that I feel needs to be added is a chat in the multi-player lobby so that you can converse with fellow players.

The graphics look great, and I love pirate stories. Been looking for a good pirate game, but I am on a Mac so I can't play your game.

I read the descriptions. One thing that struck me that I probably won't like: being penalized for saving my game. Ouch! What are you supposed to do when you have to quit in the middle of a mission (because it is taking too long, some emergency came up, or whatever)?

    Hi all !

Thanks so much for checking out the game, yes it's been a masive undertaking, but WE'VE DONE IT !!!!!!! :)

Right, so Nev and I (Harv) are running round like crazy this week answering emails and trying to cram in a few games wherever possible, so you'll see us around in MP. Once this crazy week is out of the way, we're going to organise some tournaments through the official Buccaneer Steam Group. http://steamcommunity.com/games/Buccaneer . We'll try and give people in all time zones good times to check out the lobby and play. So if you've any suggestions about his, just chuck them here if you want.

@trmiller - If you look in the middle of the lobby, there is indeed a chat window !! :)

@GolfHacker - Well, we used to have to pay for save games with infamy, but we've taken that out. You can save your progress as many times as you like for free in the tavern !!

    Cheers

    Harv

This looks awesome, but is it ONLY on sale through steam? I hate buying games where I can't just download an exe file and get on with it. I don't want to set up a steam account and bloat out my pc with a permanently running steam client tbh.

Yes, it's available exclusively through steam at the moment.

Due to our small team, uuur, I mean duo ... We decided to concentrate on our steam PC launch, get it all ship shape, and get to grips with the community side of it all, and try and get it out there that way, especially with only our meager ships rations to spend on PR.. I guess it's the same problem many indie devs. have...

As we're a couple of blokes in a back room of Nevs appartment turned into a studio, (Das Boot) we thought it best to go straight for the Steam version, and run all the servers and achievements etc. through them...I've not really used Steam that much before the past month other than HL2 etc. but I have to say I'm completely sold on the idea.. I'm really liking the place...Ask me again when I've filled my HD with a TB of demo's though .. LOL !!

    Heh.

Agree with Cliffski - I'd almost definitely probably have a look at this but I'm not about to start buggering about with Steam. Generally don't bother with BFG games for exactly the same reason. If I'm going to download something I just want an EXE I can install myself without meddling with some cock-eyed game manager/downloader-installer.

    I'm hearing ya!

Yeah, I know where you guys are coming from, but in order for us, ( ie. Nev and I ), to realistically be able to hook the multipayer servers together and get it out to the world, we had to go with a solution that would keep everything in one place. And it's been an almost total, huge, fantasic, positive experience to date, and as far as us devs. are concerned, they're a real friendly bunch too, both Steam and the community using it ... so it's been a monumentally good decision for us..100%

That's not to say in the future we'd turn our backs on a version with an .exe that can be downloded etc. it's got to be something we have take on board eh? a no brainer.., and obviously we want to get the game out to as many people as we can. But for now, we're concentrating on getting the following big, the online games full, and get the reputation of the gameplay flowing...the best way for us to do that as a small team is to keep our efforts focused in one place, and get the multiplayer servers bursting with people having a laugh...get some cool reviews, a bit of revenue, and then start following other avenues to get it out to a bigger audience...

Well, that's what I think anyhow..

Wow, the graphics looks very nice. Not only the art, but also the rendering code seems to be top quality (based on the screenshots). As I am also involved in shader programming, I am curious how performant it is in terms of frames per second.

As I can see, most of the indie games are designed to run well on older video cards. It is a very interesting question that what market is there for indie, or even casual! games using newer video techniques.
My upcoming game is at least 'casual-ish', but its graphics is based on shaders, and for the best quality it needs SM3.0. I am wondering what kind of market there is for going for the advanced, but a little bit hardware demanding 3D techniques.

Thanks nadam :D Nice to have some positive feedback Sir !!

I'm running a fairly okay PC, AMD 3200+, Nvidea 8600GT, shder 3.0 and I'm getting between 45 and 100 FPS in the single player campaign, unless you're in a serious fight where it can dip a bit, but is quite rate.

Multiplayer runs a bit slower on mine, usually betwen 35 and 65, around that kind of frametrate..Especially if there are 8 Ships in there with all the particles they generate for wake, cannonballs, smoke, splinters of wood, fire, splashes etc. etc.

It'll run on shader 2.0 easily enough too, you just lose a couple of layers of polish ie. specularity on the water, but most of the water shader etc. is fine.

Fair play. I'm sure there's plenty of Steam users already without you really caring two hoots about what me and Cliffski think. If Steam is doing what you want it to do, all well and good. :)

LOL !! Yeah, well, we see how we get on. We'll we're going to want to get out to as many people as we can, and we have got ideas for widening the availablility of the game at some point, so cheers for the comments. They're always helpful.

By the way, if you want to see it in action, I've recorded a bit of Single Player game and made a trailer out of it. It's taken on my AMD 3200+, Nvidea 8600GT, using FRAPS which is knocking 40 or 50 frames off the rendering, but even so, you can get an idea of gameplay.

    A couple of comments:
    - tried to install steam on my old machine, kept crashing
    - worked on my new machine, beautiful game
    - sort of felt like I was driving a big Cadillac on the ocean
    - had fun blowing things up with the cannons
    - crashed trying to join a multiplayer game

Overall great job, but as other have mentioned Steam exclusivity may impact sales (and crashing).

    Hi FlySim,

Thanks for checking us out ! Yes, we've found a problem with some PCs joining MP games that are already running, we're on it and it'll be fixed and patched in the next few days. I've built 2 new test decks from scratch this week and can't recreate on either...Slipped through the net...GUTTED !! :(

Yeah, I'm with you, the points you guys have raised will be sorted, certainly seems true that once we've found our feet we need to think about these distribution areas eh?

Again, thanks for the input to all, it really is a big help. It can be an isolated existence locked up in 'Das Boot' staring at these PC's it's good to get some outside opinion !

Lets face it, we haven't got all the answers !

    Cheers
