I think I would enjoy the game more if the line would contract (and have the possibility of causing a "match") whenever there are like-coloured bugs on either end of a gap. Afterall, contraction and combos make the game fun!

Also, if you don't do it in all instances, it seems inconsistent. My subconscious asks, "Why do they contract here, but not there?" "Why did they contract just now, but not match!?" There didn't seem to be a pattern to this behaviour, so I assumed it was a bug.

In some occasions I had 4 or 5 balls near the exit, detached from the rest of the chain, and making matches there moved the tail forward. I literally thought "you are punishing me for making matches!".

Thats exactly how it works. If not there's a bug. (err.. error)

I thought you said above that fireballs and bombs don't cause collapses? This is what I have noticed.

Sometimes I'd use a bomb, and there'd be like-coloured bugs on either end of the gap created by the bomb, and yet the line wouldn't collapse/contract.

Oh yeah... that much is true. If you only mean in those cases then yes. Although that may change. Tons of changes to make over the next few weeks. I expect the game will improve greatly overall thanks to the comments here and from my beta list.
