Yay, spending 20 months for the 'chance' to win $50k. I'd rather spend that time working in McDonalds.

Every time there is a contest like this I say the same thing: if your game is good enough to win a contest it's good enough to polish yourself and sell on your own.

    You are right, but....
An 'Atari' label will do wonders to the sale of your game.
As an indie, I find promoting and marketing a lot harder than developing.
As long as you take a cut, you could end up a rich man.

Wouldn't enter on those terms. Absolutely no point.

    I find exactly the opposite.

In my eyes, you'd need at the very least $1m in the bank to qualify as anything like 'a rich man'. This contest offers you $25k + 2% royalty (after costs) *if* you win the top prize. So the game would need to earn almost $50 million in profit before you'd reach that milestone. My guess is self publishing the same mythical title would at the very least generate you $10m, even if you put zero effort into marketing.

Oops... I missed that 2% royalty, I agree: better to pass on it.
