Default Games for Males

We are putting together a casual games portal in eastern Europe and wondering what everyone thinks are the best games aimed at the male audience.

Games featuring Giant Mecha Pirate Dinosaur Ninja Monkeys from Outer Space are a sure winner.
Everything degrading women will also pretty much ensure it has a male audience. But I think you're more looking for inclusion, not exclusion, I guess.

Most sport games seem to be a male domain (with the exception of Figure Skating Manager: Pink Flower Edition, maybe).

Games which are build upon domination seem to be played by males a lot, while games building on cooperation are more appealing to women.

Well, then there is pr0n obviously.

Some themes seem to attract primarily males (Sci-Fi, tech themes).

So... if you mix it all together you get
"Super Sci-Fi Football Giant Mecha Pirate Dinosaur Ninja Monkey Tournament Special Edition - ingame stripper lust pet included."

For males, you are probably going to want to look for games involving challenge. Specifically, anything that pits you against something (hoardes of enemies, strict time limits, stronger AI opponents, some kind of skill etc).

Skill games tend to do well with men (i.e. reaction or coordination skills).

Men also like optimisation games when there is a very clear goal to provide them with challenge, plus you would want a lot of feedback so the goals are clear and progress is obvious (think status bar etc).

That's what I was going to mention, most males tend to flock to games that involve shooting, thinking, and simulation (sports, cars). Women tend to like more "casual" stuff like like all those mindless clicking-fest casual games on the top 10 lists.

I've been hooked on FizzBall, lately.

I was hooked on Zuma, until my PC crashed last year and I switched to Linux. Alas, no Zuma for Linux. Or maybe that's a good thing...

Oh nice - another "insert your plug here" thread . Lemme join the fun...

MAGI is obviously targeted mainly at men (although quite few women bought it too). As was mentioned - any game that involves strategy, challenge, and thinking, appeals to guys.
And a strategic game about dueling wizards, in wich you must constantly improve your strategy to outsmart the harder and harder opponents, fits above desription perfectly.

Now... if I would only made those wizards ninjas...

If I like a game that has unicorns, french crabs, a flower and a bunny as playable characters, am I okay?

Hehe, just kidding.

Penguin vs. Yeti attracts much more males than females. Though kinda cute, it's hard to master.

I would say yes if you play them with your girlfriend or someone else.

You should check lostgarden.com they guys there are making prototype games in that same style, cute characters, hearts and bunnies, which I find amusing because they are mostly male developers, I mean the graphics by Danc are amazing but it's weird to see a lot of male developers asking for more "cute" graphics, like bunnies and hearts.

Hey, I asked for hearts so we'd have some powerups

If you now of another quality open set of rpg tiles feel free to pm me

Shmups are another genre typically male correct? I think that falls into the one man vs hordes of enemies category...

I know this was meant as a joke, but why hasn't anyone done this? There is surely a cult hit to be made here. Not enough sales for a big studio, but enough to keep an indie in fish suppers for life, surely?

Anything that is competitive and features even mild violence is automatically appealing to men and boys. Its in our nature.

Skill City was sort of swinging away from the female casual game audience when we decided to make all of our games two-player competitive.

Right now in our database we have 300 users. About 75% of them are male. We just have puzzle games, truly casual games, yet we have avatars that beat each other and the games can be played real-time one vs one (or ants in 4 players). I know thats whats roping in the boys.

Default Games whose rating is correlated with Gender

At reflexive.com, we added some personality questions (for registered users) for fun. Below are the games where the user's rating of the game is significantly correlated with whether the user said they were male (the number is the correlation score, from 0 to 1)

'R.I.P 3: The Last Hero', 0.642662
'Crimsonland', 0.58629
'R.I.P: Strike Back', 0.584063
'WW2 Pacific Heroes', 0.572966
'Global Defense Network', 0.528229
'Astrobatics', 0.522589
'Jets N Guns', 0.51897
'Mexican Motor Mafia', 0.49564
'Air Strike 2', 0.483494
'Devastation Zone Troopers', 0.482069
'Star Defender 3', 0.465443
'Heavy Weapon', 0.463757
'AstroAvenger', 0.462553
'R.I.P.', 0.457289
'Alien Stars', 0.452775
'Alien Shooter', 0.447601
'Evil Invasion', 0.447256
'Jets N Guns GOLD', 0.435703
'Gish', 0.431197
'Clash N Slash', 0.385145
'Master of Defense', 0.346632
'Hamsterball', 0.339779
'Rack 'Em Up Roadtrip', 0.33732
'RocketBowl', 0.325651
'Risk II', 0.300452
'Break Quest', 0.274312
'Snail Mail', 0.265371
'Eets', 0.263646
'Platypus', 0.241252
'Astral Masters', 0.240911

... also as an aside, of all the things we asked people in the personality question stuff - gender turned out to be the most significantly correlated with a person's opinion of individual games - so I would say making gender focused sites is a good idea.

I am surprised the games like "Gal's Panic" have not had a resurgence on the indie scene. I guess the internet is so full nude pics already, who would go through a whole challenging game level just to see it. Some of those arcade games, like "Mad Donna" you just thought you were playing a pac-man clone and then BAM, naked lady.

This may be a naive question, but would this mean that about 24% of the players of Astra Masters are male (and thus 76% are female) while 64% of RIP 3 are male?

No, it doesn't mean that. The correlation number actually goes from -1 to 1 (in this case, less than 0 would be games where being female is important to liking the game, 0 means gender doesn't matter) but I just included stuff where being male is important to liking the game cause of the original question.

Not true, I think women like games where you create things or balance things, men like games where you destroy things or perform missions.

All of the customers who bought prodigious escapee are males (currently a freeware). The mind bending factor and substandard art of the game are unlikely to attract any female players except my mum. My sister called it a treacherous game made for those who are ....... (where is my kleenix ? )

LOL. Any women buy Mighty Rodent? That's a fun game. I hate to generalize, but women often like to watch or help with male games, but when you offer them the controller, they don't want to try. I think it is mainly societal and has to do with the way games emerged and were marketed. Women are quite happy to see action movies like POTC, so I think the reason many women will pass up Zelda is that games were marketed toward young boys for so many yars, and then those boys grew up and they marketed toward them.

Well some women bought it, but I guess a good number were being bought for their children. But the ones that did like it were obviously just freaks of nature.

Addictive Football as apparently women hate football and would rather do the washing up and ironing instead

Honestly, my wife told me to write this reply
