Default DS gets a Zuma clone

    http://magnetica.nintendods.com/launch/

Gotta love the "totally unique twist"... I wonder how long it'll take before more casual games get DS clones. In a way, casual gameplay and the single-click design philosophy lends itself to working great on the DS.

I wonder if this is going to open the door for indie devs with successful casual games to pitch those ideas to publishers with access to the DS. I've already had one publisher respond favourably to what was originally intended to be a casual design.

    Their twist:

Like-colored marbles will seek out each other.
Is this not the same thing in Zuma where after you make a match the gap is closed between like-colored balls?

I do like the concept of 'flinging' balls at each other though. That's an interesting use of the the stylus.

ETA: I just read a review. It seems like a launched ball with be pulled towards like-colored balls during flight, so I guess it is a new twist afterall. And there are multiplayer modes too which could be cool.

Did someone say the C-word? Go easy, especially since this game was made by Mitchell Co., the developers of Puzz Loop. IGN calls it an "official follow-up" to that game.

So, the game that was cloned by Zuma gets a sequel. Neat.

I've always said, I don't have anything against what Popcap did with Zuma, but I think these kinds of posts are highly disrespectful. It's the equivalent of taking a dump on the developer's lawn. You can understand the people at Mitchell being really annoyed.

I might make this my sig in an attempt to educate the world:

There are no Zuma clones, only Puzzloop clones!

I didn't know that. It's a shame many people will naturally assume they're copying Zuma.

Still, with access to the DS system, dual screens, touch sensitivity, etc. the best they could come up with is to clone themselves?

How do you clone yourself? It seems that if anyone has the right to make a Zuma/Puzzloop type game it would be them. (At which point I think the proper term would be "sequel".)

At times, I think people are a bit too generous with the word "clone" around here.

    Oops.

Interesting. Guess I jumped the gun a bit there... Apologies. After all, if a sequel can't learn from the marketplace, who can?

I still wonder what else we'll see from the casual space on the DS. From what I saw online, the multiplayer is either a "race" mode or a kind of "you pop balls and they get added to your opponent's train" thing.

There were a few actually... Magic Castle.. or something like that. Forget the name exactly. Used frogs instead of balls.

The Amstrad CPC had a Pang clone. Zap'T Balls? Something like that.

Not recommended. In my experience, the clone always ends up being evil, and he takes over the world before you get a chance to.

Yeah I'd probably start off being best friends with my clone but undoubtedly he'd drink up all my liquor so I'd have to beat him mercilessly.

Don't assume you could take him. You might be a pretty even match.

You guys need to read "Red Dwarf", particularly the episode where Rimmer clones himself!
