Thread: Cross platform compatibility.

  1. #1

    Default Cross platform compatibility.

How many of you target your games on platforms other than Windows ?

Is it worth it to have your code base and games to be able to run on
Linux and Mac platforms as well ?

Does the extra sales generated makes the effort worth while, and how many
more percentage of sales do you get if your games can run on linux and mac
    as well ?

Well, I don't know about linux, but I would have been one sad game developer if I hadn't made my game available for the Mac. About 65% of my sales so far have been Mac, and for the first two weeks, it was all Mac. In fact, the only reason that the percentage of Windows sales is even 35% is because I have an affiliate where the game really fits with his customers, and they're all windows. Without that affiliate, my Mac sales would be more like 90%.

wooo hoooo, looks like I gotta get myself a mac as well...

Wonder where in my hometown they're selling. And wondering the prices.
Mac ain't cheap here, costs more than an x86 system, at least where i am.

With a decent game, you'll earn that back in no time!

I released my game for macintosh first, and it did quite well only being available for that platform. Even after releasing a Windows version, I still get more than 50% of sales from mac users.

You should be able to buy a used mac for a couple hundred dollars. There are also mac porting services that can help you out.

What kind of machine would you recomend for porting a 3D game to the Mac? What are the specs of a mid-range 3D machine?
