    Default A Survey for Research

    Hi,

I'm starting up a game development business, and I want to do a little research. It would be much appreciated if you could answer a couple of multiple choice questions for me. Please give your order of preference from the three options, and if you have other suggestions or comments that would be great also. Thanks

    Question 1:
Let's say you were presented with an large, procedurally generated, three-dimensional world. Which of the following would you most enjoy doing within that world?

    a) Exploring. Wondering around, taking in the various landscapes; mountains, deserts, forests, volcanoes, icy tundras.

    b) Observing/Interacting with the inhabitants of the world. Taming wild beasts, riding them, commanding them. Seeing creatures interact with each other; fighting, playing, surviving, migrating.

    c) Seeing the world change around you, and surviving natural disasters. Large snowy mountain turning into a fiery volcano, meteor showers leaving craters, tidal waves, forest fires. Saving creatures from extinction.

    Question 2:
What perspective do you envisage this game being from, based on your above preferences?

    a) First person.

    b) Third person.

    c) Top-down, RTS style.

    Question 3:
What would your favorite game-play style be, out of the following, if a game where to include the above features?

    a) Single player.

    b) Competitive multi-player.

    c) Co-operative multi-player.

Thank you so much for your time

    Hello! Let's see...
    Question 1: b.
    Question 2: b.
Question 3: a. (but c. would be my second choice, if it matters)

I was really torn on the first question; they were both things "happening", and you got to see the consequences/results of things that nobody really started. It made me think of Majora's Mask, where you could just follow people around and see their lives.

I'm probably the only person that would vote Single Player, but I just have found that people being kind of dumb kind of kills the mood for exploration.

I agree with you there. I like the idea of co-operative, but I would want to encourage working together to achieve goals, rather than just two people playing at the same time, if you know what I mean.

Oh, yes you can put them in order of preference if you like.

    So if I pick a-c-b, you'll conclude that I want competitive world-gazing on a top-down map view?

    These would be my preferences:

    Question 1: b, then a
Question 2: a - everything else kills immersion for me
    Question 3: a, then a long time nothing, then c, then b

Question 1: b, which sort of includes a.
Question 2: a or b - actually, making this an option for the player would help to attract those that like either.
Question 3: c, assuming you can get a sizeable market interested, but it should also be (at least mostly) playable as a.

Yes, I think having both first and third is the best bet. I prefer playing games in third person but I wouldn't, for example, play a game like Minecraft in third person, because it is heavily focused on precise interactions with objects directly in front of the player. So it does depend on the game-play a lot.

    Thanks for your feedback
