Default keyboard? mouse? Both at the same time ><

Is a control system with both keyboard and mouse the kiss of death for a casual game? I read the thread about the right mouse button being difficult for casuals to handle, so would a setup where the keyboard controlled movement (generally left hand) and the mouse controlled aiming (generally right hand) be too much for this market? Or would the genre be a mitigating factor?

Personally I think it would be okay. I prefer mouse control for many twitch shooter type games. All commercial FPS games that use that control method make it optional so it's probably best to make the controls redefinable if possible.

    In a word: YES.

But I would have a different answer if you asked about using simulations keyboard and mouse in an Indie game, or a downloadable game, or a try and buy game. But since you specifically asked about “casual” games, I would say that simulations keyboard and mouse would be a kiss of death.

I dunno. Take Puppyton... if that way keyboard/mouse, I would have bought it. Crimsonland and some others also do it pretty well.

What I meant was that a game with simulations keyboard and mouse controls may be popular with the people who visit GameTunnel.com but not with most of the people who visit BigFishGames.com or RealArcade. Crimsonland has done well over all but has done poorly on casual games sites like Real and Big Fish.

It is more than likely than casual gamers would want a mouse-only controlled game. And not a very pacy one, I would add.
