Thread: A new disease: the INDYTE!

Cool A new disease: the INDYTE!

Yes, I am proud to be the first one to announce a great discovery: the INDYTE!
What is it? Are you infected but you don't know it? you can check yourself with this simple test. Answer yes or no the following questions:

    1) when you're on holidays after 2-3 days away from your pc and your indie stuff you feel suddenly sad?
    2) you're at the sea, all around beautiful girls in bikini but you still think about that damn algorithm of pathfinding?
    3) you take a walk in a mountain path and instead of admiring the landscape you think how you could represent it using Voxel technology?
    4) you don't care to work on your indie business 10 hours a day?
    5) you can't wait to begin the next game, and you have 10 new game ideas a day?

If you answered yes to 2 questions out of 5, then YES, you're infected by INDYTE!!!

p.s. I answered yes to all questions, except 2. Infact, I don't think about pathfinding looking at girls in bikini, I start thinking about bezier curves implementation in 3d engines...

I've got it bad, but what i did was relocate the whole business to the beach and bikini girls so I could have both.

When I look at girls in bikini's I think "Why are they not symmetrical, like you would get in a videogame?"

    Talking

Yes to all except girls at the beach.. normally have my lady with me and my laptop close by to keep me busy so I wouldn't even be looking

I agree 10 hours a day is mild. 8am till 5am is what I averaged when I was on holidays from (current full time employement) - when I leave in 3 weeks I will be back on the 16 hours+ a day I spend doing something connected to my game development

    16+ hours a day? That's insane.

It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Pace yourself so you'll be able to finish the race.

Okay, I hate to sound hostile and all, but Svero, stop saying this. Okay? Enough. It's like waving water at a man in the desert. You can enjoy your little topless indochina programmer's paradise without gloating about it all the time. I swear, some guys I just want to kick in the head.

    A little jealous, perhaps?

I certainly concede that I do not PLAN on doing 16 hours a day (lucky to do 6 while also working full time elsewhere). I do however, when completely free to do my stuff end up anywhere between 12-16 hours a day - over the course of a week working, working working.. yes it can cause burnout but because I always get a break after a week or so I never feel it.

I code much better when I am not distracted - which tends to be at night when I am on my own downstairs.. If I start on something at 8am that morning - I will have the odd break here and there, watch a bit of TV, but I will get back to it and often be awake until 5/6 am the next day.

Hell I have even worked from 9am until 6am the next day when I worked in Games QA - it's just the way it goes I suppose.

Bear in mind I am starting from behind here, I have a lot of catching up to do and a hell of a lot of coding. Once I was at the stage of some of you guys, sure I can ease up

Depends on how you define the "working hours".
For example I take, expecially during the day, frequent breaks (once per hour) because isn't healthy to stay for long periods in front of pc.
During the night I am more productive because usually there's less distractions.
If I consider the time spent in making indie stuff (considering also website, marketing, etc) I can say that I work from 9 to 13 then from 15 to 22... so about 10-11h of effective work

Ah! I'm infected. Hopefully there is a high-priced cure out there somewhere. Maybe in the form of a compiler?

Hi, I'm Ricardo, and I'm a neurotic developer

My particular form in Indyte is that whenever I come up with a good idea for a game (or at least what seems like it ), I first become euphoric because I've found a new angle the "big boys" haven't tapped yet. In today's case, it's a new spin on the match-3 genre. It seems like a pretty dang good idea right now, which I think could help me create a match-3 game that really stands apart from the rest.

But then... Euphoria gives way to self-doubt. "Is it really THAT original?" "Who's to say I will implement it as well as I can picture it?" "What if my artist lets me down?" But no matter. I finally convince myself that the idea is indeed great, and that if someone here at Indiegamer came up with it first, I would think they were indeed on to something great.

Then... Euphoria and self-doubt give way to terror. "Omigoshomigoshomigosh it's such an OBVIOUS idea!!!! Popcap and Reflexive and everyone else will have done this twice over by the time I get around to it. I'm F**KED!!!!"

Based on past experience, I will go through this cycle over and over again until I actually write the game, or someone beats me to the punch. Bloody 'ell.

Ya think? The problem with Svero is, you like, ask a question like, "How do you apply a vertex shader to the quad you're rendering?" and he comes back with, "Well, from my beach-house, I'm not using vertex shaders," or "Whenever a girl in a bikini walks by my window, I say to myself, 'now that would be an interesting vertex fader, the swaying effect.'"

I mean, I don't burden you guys with, "And the snow is beautiful outside my window" or "hey guys, even though it's March, we got 1-3 inches of snow yesterday, ha-ha!"

So I'm basically identifying Svero's INDYTE here: a psychopathic need to "casually mention" his harem and beach house.

(BTW, this is all tongue in cheek... if I lived near a beach in Thailand with gorgeous Thai girls walking around everywhere-- in bikinis, no less-- I too would find ways to insert it into the most mundane of conversations, even pixel RGB code)
