Lightbulb Light of Altair - Beta 0.2

    Back with a Beta,
If you like old-school tough strategy games with a puzzle feel, and if you have a weighty good graphics card - and you promise to leave some feedback please download my beta here:

Edit: Link is Expired (This revision of the beta is over)
Light of Altair Beta 0.3 59Mb

N.B. 1) Requires DirectX 9c to be installed.
N.B. 2) Limited time beta - In a few weeks time (or when my bandwidth quota runs out) I'll be pulling this beta.

If it runs too slowly try adding a screen size to the shortcut's target eg:
    "C:\Program Files\SaintXi\Light of Altair\Altair.exe" -width:640 -height:480

    Feedback concerns:
    i) Did it run on your computer fast/slow what build do you have?
ii) How long did you play for?
iii) Did you finish it? (on Challenge Mode and get 100% on each misson?)

    Light of Altair
A SciFi colony building game. Rendered in full DirectX 3D. It has a strong story between different factions leaving Earth - and you play different missions taking the role of different factions seeing several sides of the same events.

Kinda off-topic (will have to download the beta when I am back home) but the name first reminded me of Assassin's Creed from UBI.. and then the logo reminded me of UBI Soft's logo itself.

Anyways, going to give it a try later on.

Named after the star Altair, and logo based on a spiral galaxy motif. Not so similar to UBI that I need a new logo I hope - spirals are a popular logo! Then again if a logo change could net me better distribution I am open to ideas

SaintXI - it looks interesting but the the title screen logo/ font doesn't work at all for me... It's too much of a "funny" font to match a serious game... and makes the logo look cheap imho.

This is just a quick play with the idea of a spiral, light and a different font and a background image that imho ties the title screen better to the space themed ingame screens.

I like it. Times like this I wish I had a bigger team (Including a designer!). That redesign is very interesting, and the diagonal ray of light ties in well with the title.

DayDream - thanks for the help, I've remade the logo using your design. I love the colours and font in your design - my chunkier/grey style is more consistent with the rest of the game (The original 'Funny' font is down to the same style reasoning - trying to match the feel of the game - and missing )

My opinion? Ditch this. It looks really cheesey. Your redesign of DayDream's already awesome design is even better than his in most ways. Keep that, ditch the industrial fist and nuke blast images on the sides. If you want to keep them, I'd make a fake box and put them on the back along with a couple of images from the game and post it on your web site. Or just have those images on your site as just images because alone they do look really cool (and probably gives a clearer picture of what the game could be about), but all together smushed into one image is too much.

Also one last thing, the lense flair is too noticable and too center. Day Dream got it right the first time.

Other than that, the game and logo looks great. Good luck, man.

TBH I don't think he even needs a logo at all. The new logo reminds me of Spore (sorry, I know it's annoying but all these logos look similar to each other:P).

The fist and nuke are not part of the logo - they are images from the backstory. I just merged them all together to give a feel for the game, possibly misleading in all the logo discussion!

I'll tweak the rainbow flare a bit.

I'm most interested in the font styling, since that could stand alone as a brand for the game. The other features are to make an interesting in game splash screen.

I can't unsee the Spore thing now. I also see Phantasy Star Online in there as well. Still looks fine though, imo.

The font is kind of generic and could be more stylized and original, but there are tons of games with generic fonts that are still very distinctive.

I prefer the first original logo tbh.

One more, with the off centre rainbow lens flare.

I appreciate the comments, getting the first impressions right should help improve my link and download rates (a lot more than tweaking the actual gameplay!)

I can imagine styling the capitals a bit to make it less generic.

You're obsessing on something that most people are going to be annoyed they can't click through faster.

Would love more feedback on the game too... anyone finished the beta levels yet?

I prefer to think that he's obsessing over something that will catch his customer's eye.
