Thread: Art Parts for Building Characters?

  1. #1

Question Art Parts for Building Characters?

I've started practicing my art more (definitely a weaker talent of mine). I've been learning how to draw Anime/Manga style.

I realized though that a lot of the cartoon art is just drawing different combinations of the same pieces over and over again. Is there any site that has SVGs of all the eyes, noses, heads, hair-dos, etc. already drawn? I figure, with something like that, I could just start piecing together characters without redrawing over and over again.

Uh huh. And how is your art going to get better if you aren't practicing it?

It's true. I think my brain is just getting a bit tired of learning new things. Java, Game Design, game physics, OpenGL, OpenAL, networking, 3D modeling, Blender, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash, Flex, ANT, NSIS, and now... a whole slew of art lessons.... maybe I just need a break.

But yes, I'll keep practicing. ;-)

If you mishmash ready made parts, it will look just like that, a mishmash. I don't really see the relation between practicing art and taking the easy ugly way out? Maybe start with "how to draw cartoons" books, way easier than real anatomy. And let's face it, manga without real anatomy looks cheap like bad deviantart wannabes.

If done right it won't be a mishmash. For example, if the artist was the same, the style was the same and the parts were tested to fit with all the parts, it's doable.

Elias, if you want to learn how to draw, then practicing is the best way to go about it. Tutorials at these sites will help you along (if you didn't know about them already): Manga Revolution and Manga Tutorials.

Btw, submit a drawing to Manga Tutorials (as a Your Art submission) and I'll tell you about some manga-style paperdolls I know about. ; )

I *think* I've heard that if you buy RPG maker it comes with a 'facemaker' program that will do a certain kind of anime-style heads... but I don't have it myself.

Not sure about anything which comes with RPG Maker ( I looked in the folder and I don't see anything ) but there's this, which is certainly discussed on the RPG Maker forums.

Hmmm... I think that's the one I have. No wonder I couldn't work it if it requires RPG Maker. :P
