Has anyone ever made a musical-rhythm typing game?

You mean like, you hear music and you type stuff based on the rhythm?

This is a great idea.

I've never personally run across one.

If you're talking about musical pattern games for PC, I saw one on TIGS old version but the article seems to be lost.
It was a dance game, halloween themed I think.

Recently there was a nice flash game called 'Beat Bubbles' which may have similar gameplay to what you are thinking of?

Oh no! You are tapping into my idea stream!
I'm working on an RPG where one of the characters does battle by you pressing keys to the music - it's kinda like dance dance battle revolution. As you get more combos the music changes and your attacks grow in intensity..

I'm kind of in this area right now too.

Oh, I'm just pondering. It's not something I'm working on.

Although I admit that the idea of an 80s-style "bad white rap" typing tutor is HILARIOUS. Especially since I saw the Windows 386 promotional video recently. :)

Take a look in this forum discussion (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=16.0), someone is prototyping a typing game.

Great minds and all that, right? <sigh>

I was at an E3 4-5 years ago and there was a Korean company demoing a game where you "played" piano by using the keyboard. (C/C#/D/D#/E/F/etc was mapped to Q/2/W/3/E/R/etc...). Notes would fall down from the sky and when they hit this horizontal line, you were supposed to push the key down, a la Dance Dance Revolution.

On the higher levels the notes would fall so fast you would literally be playing Chopin etudes, it was ridiculous.

I wish I could remember the name of it....

Almost sounds like soundtracker ;) those notes kinda fell from the sky when you were in record mode :D

EDIT: actually, they rose from the earth, doh!

This reminds me of a little game I played years ago, which required a real MIDI-keyboard to control the game (I don't remember its name).

There was an empty staff with a G-clef at the left and notes came from the right and you had to try to shoot those notes by hitting the correct keys and prevent any notes from reaching the clef at the left.

There is a version of Dance Dance Revolution you can play with the keyboard, and more or less type to the beat.

However you only use the arrow keys, as one would use the dance pad on the original game with arrows on it. You can redefine those keys to be anything.

If you are talking about typing actual words to the beat of music, havent seen one of those. Beat matching long and short words would require you to have some pretty strange music though, or to come up with some work around. Ask somebody to spell Dictionary and your 4/4 beat is going to be left hanging a little... How would you handle that one?

I think thats a great idea for a fun game though!

I love Typing of the Dead but it doesnt have any music elements. :(
