View Full Version : Would this game idea 'work' as a casual game ...

Not that I'm gong to start development of any new game just yet, but ...

Have just been to see 'HOT FUZZ' (you *must* go see it ... it's just way too funny not to).

Anyway ... the game idea (feel free to steal) ...

Lots of cute things - teddy bears - bambi's - etc ...

You're in a evil looking metal tank and you have to shoot the **** out of all the cute stuff? Lots of visual effects - decapitations - blood.

Is there a market for this (in casual download land) ?

Well, it'd be popular as a free flash game on newgrounds, I bet! :) (The impression I get, their audience loves that kind of thing.)

Some games I'll download if someone points me to them. The game you've described is one I would actually seek out if someone told me about it. However I doubt I'd pay for it, and maybe the kind of audience that generally pays for casual games wouldn't download it...

Reminds me of the Amiga game "Kill the Smurfs" (or some such name). You invade the Smurf village and horribly massacre hundreds of smurfs. :)

I doubt that would work well as a casual game, since the casual crowd usually doesn't like violence. That's just conjecture on my part, though; the best way to find out is to rig up a prototype and test it on a casual audience (I suggest starting with your mom. :-))

Yeah, workiing title: Kill All Teddies ...

I've gone off the idea now anyway, boy that was fast! Was just the vision of teddies being ripped apart (arms and legs detached) and stuffing (or blood) flying everywhere, rather than the stereotypical kill aliens etc ...

Hi-
I had this idea too! It was a while back, I even have a really rubbish prototype. As a stress-busting game I think it works, but I am now focussing entirely on something that works in the casual market.
I also began to realise that (in my case) it was a 1-trick game, and I had no interesting gameplay ideas beyond the basic idea. Still surprised nobody has done this idea though.

What you described is more CONTENT than game.

It's like asking if a game about racing cars is a good idea.

Here's my idea.

For kids: Imagine Care Bear skinned Metal Slug. Change the weapons to non lethal stuff like shrink, freeze and heat rays that burn the villians bottoms and you might be able to sell it to kids. Everything "kids next door" should be.

Hardcore gamer side: Your idea with tons of bravado a la duke nukem(but more). Main characters that talked trash while killing teddy bears and stuff. Gunny and Bruce Campbell come to mind.

Hope you make it for PC I don't have a game boy.

You will get lots of young people playing it, but I doubt you will get many sales. You should be wary of games that appeal to teenagers, they have no money.

..in this case the parents might be reluctant to cough up the dough.

My brother is 17 and has plenty of money to buy magic the gathering stuff and the newest RPG or FPS, money for his car, expensive computer and parts, and is stupid enough to borrow money from me. He buys MTG stuff with a prepaid card I bought for our mom. He loads it with money at the store and off he goes. He owns a PSP, GBA and a camera phone. And he doesn't like stealing(damn goody goody:) He works at Arby's.

He would buy this game.

You've described pretty much nothing and I believe there is no market for a game about nothing. Sorry.

killing and blood in a casual game? Killing so called "cute things"? Can you do a likeness to winnie the pooh and micky mouse without getting sued?

build it and they will come, or at least I will

ok, how much is it?

...sounds good, lemme get a card to put it on.....!

Ehhh.... Probally not a commercial market.
Not many people would see a game like that and even download it.
That just sounds like the description for some game you'd see on the Game Maker Comuntiy (http://forums.gamemaker.nl)

But, I might download it if I knew it was yours.

BTW> Small world! I've seen you (as cosmic4z (http://forum.gbadev.org/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=431)) posting the demo of QWAK (http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=11072) on GBA Dev (http://www.gbadev.org) (which I have on my EFA-Linker)
