View Full Version : The cost of bandwidth

What do you think a fair cost for bandwidth these days is? Here are a few data points:

I pay 6 cents per GB on my dedicated server (if I maxed out my bandwidth).

LiquidWeb dedicated servers are between 10 cents and 22 cents per GB.

Amazon S3 charges 20 cents per GB, plus a little for storage.

FileKicker charges 40 cents per GB.

Exaserve charges 40 cents per GB.

FileBurst charges between 75 cents and 1$ per GB.

Amazon seems to be undercutting the other hosting services with S3. They have a huge scale, and experience hosting giant enterprise quality sites. I know that Manifesto Games went with S3 for their file hosting. It's still possible to get bandwidth for significantly cheaper on your own dedicated servers, but that entails more management.

I'm posting this since I recently asked a portal how much they were deducting for bandwidth fees and I was shocked at the high price they quoted for their bandwidth. So... do you know how much you're being charged for bandwidth? What's fair and what's excessive?

I'd just like to point out that Amazon S3 is also a CDN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_Distribution_Network), which of course makes the value proposition even better. Overall, I've been very happy with S3 since I started using it last October. Maybe more of the portals should look into it? :)

"Bandwith costs" is one of those expenses that many portals like to detract at INSANE costs.
You can get unmetered servers for $49 month (or even less if you do some negotiatios)... they really should reduce their bandwidth costs to 0, like Reflexive did last year.

LiquidWeb just doubled the bandwidth of all it's customers for free - a nice way of saying thanks for your custom.

I go me one of them fancy liquidweb servers too, and I have to say their service is impressive.

If you guys are feeling generous you can click the liquidweb link in the footer of this page before you order. That way IndieGamer get's credit if you order a server, the credit goes towards the monthly fees hosting the forums so it all works out nicely. :D

I believe it's 800gb + 800gb (incoming/outgoing), right?

Anyway, SillySoft. That GB amount is only one factor... you really have to know what kind of machine there is, how big pipe, support level... comparing only GBs doesn't give you enough information in the end to make a decision.
