Can that be done?

Like could I use programs like ActiveMark and Software Passport without using TryMedia or Pilimus as a distributor, and just handle all the sales yourself?

Never used Activemark, but Software Passport/Armadillo leaves it up to you. Since it's well known, some reg services support automated key creation/delivery.

Forget ActiveMark unless you're big time, otherwise Trymedia won't give you time of day. Armadillo/Software Passport is relatively cheap and integrates well with most payment processors.

If you meant you wish to process payments yourself using your own merchant account, Armadillo has tools to create keys on your backend server using php, asp, etc. Unless you have considerable volume I'd just use a payment processor to get up and running faster. Rolling your own mechant account is not trivial.

The tools were free, now you have to pay a stupid amount of money for them.

I'll throw in execryptor to the wash, they have the option to let you have a set of prefab keys, use their site to generate a key should you need it to be based on specifics (and don't want to tie it on your own site), usernames, hw id etc, and they also provide cgi junk to sit on your own server.
