Used to be you had a version of the game up online, and then 'DELUXE' for download, with all sorts of extra goodness. It seems that this isn't the case anymore.

What are your thoughts on using the "Deluxe" monikor for full fledged download versions?

Some games still do it. A recent example is Delicious Deluxe. To me it causes consumer confusion, what is the Web Version versus Deluxe Version versus Full Version, and confused consumers buy less. Think it's simply a weak patch on poor upsell that is all too rampant in web versions.

To accomplish the proper effect think web versions should have built into them a "Free Download" button and clearly state in text something like "Now playing the basic limited web version. Play the free deluxe download which features enhanced game play!". That and they should do proper direct upsell to the full versions and so forth.

All the games created at Zylom also get a web version. Finding the right balance between the web and deluxe versions can be tricky though. Add too many features to the web version and the player won't be interested in spending money on a deluxe version, add too few and they might assume that the deluxe version isn't worth their time either.

I think the big advantage of having a web version is that people can try out your came immediately, click on a link and 10 seconds later you're playing the game.

On a site like Zylom there's an added advantage of long time exposure on the front page if you're web game is successful. Some of the web games have been on the front page for years and the accompanying deluxe games are still selling quite nicely.

There is, of course, "The Sims Deluxe". In that case I think it means "The Sims with a few add-on packs thrown in".

Of course, I don't *think* they sell many copies through downloads...
