My blog is getting hit with ~30 comment ads from blogspot "marital aids" kinds of ads a day. I'm using WordPress to power my blog, hosted on DreamHost. Anybody else have this problem? I do mark these guys as spam in WP but I would like a solution short of banning all blogspot originating comments.

I can't remember the exact names, but there's a handful of spam detection/catching plugins for Wordpress. Check either on Wordpress's page, or I suspect there was a digg story that linked them.

Akismet is the only spam filter you'll ever need.

Akismet is the only spam filter you'll ever need.
I second that. The only downside is the slight nag of the paranoid that you're missing a false positive if you don't look through the spam once in a while... which is a pain, especially if you have hundreds of spam posts per day. Give it a try!

I've also heard good things about Akismet.

Spam Karma 2 (http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/) is great too.

Akismet looks pretty good - I've dropped them a line to see if I can avoid the $50 a month enterprise fee. I don't feel like an enterprise but who knows.

Thanks

I like Spam Karma (http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/). It's 100% free, highly effective, and does not rely on an external service (as Akismet does). There are several parameters you can tweak to adjust how the genetic algorithm catches spam, but I've been running it on the default settings on all three of my blogs for several months now. It catches every bit of spam that comes in and I've had only one false positive.

Thanks for the tips. I just enabled Akismet on my blog-- we'll see how it works out. If it fails, on to Spam Karma 2.

(Why did I choose Akismet over SK2? Akismet came pre-installed. :P )

What's the problem using an external service?

I tried to activate Akismet but couldn't because I'm not a registered WordPress blogger (I host on my own site as well so can't get support) so I don't have a WordPress user name which they require to activate.

I then decided to try SpamKarma. It was easy to install, download, ftp upload, install from the plug-ins tab on my WordPress admin page. I don't like the moderation UI as much as the default WordPress UI - it's not as clear to me as the simple radio button marking system - but it's installed and hopefully will start to stem the flood of cialis, propecia, tramadol and marital aid ads that I've been getting.

Thanks.

Signup for a Wordpress login here (http://wordpress.com/signup/), and check "Just a username, please."

Sonicron, I saw that but didn't see how it would change a thing on my dreamhost install so I want with SK2. Two days later not a single spam has gotten through.
