View Full Version : Anyone get a Wii?

Hey did anyone get a Wii this morning? I ordered one online, but it's 7-10 days shipping :(
If you got one, how is it? How is the response time between movement and what you see on the screen?

Wii have one...
Have only played a few games so far, but impressions are pretty good.
Wii Sports is definately fun - can see it as a hit with plenty of non-gamers you may have over.
Red Steel is good..ish. The multiplayer is pretty bland, and the game is a run of the mill shooter, but its fun using the Wii-mote.
Tony Hawk downhill skater - fun using the motion sensitivities of the mote.
Haven't tried out Monkey Ball or Madden yet - but assume they will have the same fun novelty. Its yet to be seen if it will have longevity, but I asssume that some games will, some games wont.
The response time and movement on screen is pretty decent - but its still a pain to aim (especially in Red Steel). Maybe this just taking getting used to, but I still prefer a mouse for fast gaming to any console any day.

I'm gonna wait it out. It's not officially out in Venezuela yet, so importers are reselling it for $500 per unit. Fuck 'em.

I just set ours up and tried out a few sports. My wife really loved the bowling. I thought tennis was super fun. Best tennis game I've played since Pong. :-) The 'try this' factor will be tremendous!
Fingers crossed, I predict Wii will outsell the other consoles, IF sufficient hardcore games are released on a continuous basis. If publishers don't step up with a full plate of games, Wii will hurt over time.
Gamecube was a nice machine that could handle any PS-2 game created. But publishers shipped mostly immature titles.
So, what games do people here suggest buying? Would love to hear hands-on accounts.

No but i had a good night on a PS3 and was one of a lucky few UK to get my hands on a Jap machine but its my friends as he owns Voodoo consoles and i have to take it back 2morro.
TBH my 360 is still looking pretty good against the PS3 and i wouldnt pay £800 plus for an import ...i dont think i will even get one...
The WII looks good.....

I'm waiting to see what the situation is with people like me who are "between worlds", so to speak. Living in Japan, planning to move back home to New Zealand soonish, and all my Gamecube games are American...

The Virtual Console seems pretty weak at the moment...
Around 10 launch titles - from what I recall, F-Zero, Wario Woods, Zelda (NES), Super Mario 64, etc.
Each around $8 - 10...
Nothing to jump at yet.

A friend sold me his extra pre-ordered Wii, but I'm not touching it until I post the final version of DTA. Pretty good incentive to finish my game. :)

Got my Wii this morning - spent time playing sports with the kids - then later on letting kids play Raving Rabbids for a while -- really fun! Then later on about 3 hrs of Zelda by myself while wife and kids went shopping. Pure heaven! I'm not a giant Zelda fan but I love great adventures and this is simply awesome. The Wii is amazing! At first my wife the non-gamer was really angry - trying to figure things out. But once she played bowling she was seriously hooked. And the baseball was fun as well!
Zelda is, great! Old and new together - and even the horse has character.

We? Why? ;)
Seriously, I never owned a console (several reasons - not really a gamer, ridiculously expensive in this part of the world) but the Wii may be fun. I think Nintendo had the right idea with a cheap console with an interesting controller allowing new gameplay instead of pushing yet more polygons per second.

With consoles, I usually wait until a good emulator becomes available so that I can play the games on my PC. I'll play the games if they are good, but I don't like spending money on the proprietary hardware that's useless for anything other than the five or so worthwhile games that come out on the system. If the game is worth playing now, it's still worth playing in five years.
Yeah, the Wii's pretty cool. Wii Sports is a blast. Had some friends over yesterday, and each of them proclaimed they'd be buying one when they can find one in store. Monkey Ball's alright, with it's 50 minigames, though the Wii Sports interpretations of the same games are much better. Trauma Center is neato. Red Steel and Zelda, I wouldn't trust my opinion of these games yet, as it's rather low at the moment. Also, waiting for a component video cable, sensor bar extension cable, and extra chucks to be available does suck.

Does that mean that PS2 and XBOX emulators are around the corner?:D
Not that their games are particularly interesting tbh:o
More on topic: I think the Wii could have a tremendous success with casual gamers. Seriously who wouldn't want to try it just for the tennis or the golf game?
Although I'd hhave hoped they would stick to the early prototype and released a full VR machine with the helmet (maybe it's a future peripheral?)

But I'll get one when I'll have time to play. Too much things going on at the moment. And I'm VERY interested in getting a Wii bundled with Zelda. NDS was the last Nintendo system I bought at immediate release, they won't get me again! Sorry a little off topic. :)

I got it. I had to stand in line for 3 hours at Best Buy to get it. I was only planning to stand for about 30 minutes at a Walmart but they were already sold out so I had to make a mad dash around town.
Anyway, I got Zelda and of course Wii Sports. If you asked my opinion of Wii Sports after the first 30 minutes, it would have been pretty lukewarm. The graphics are borderline jarring in some instances and the games are very simplistic. Initially my wife was just passively watching me play not showing much interest. She said it looked like an enhanced Eye Toy to her. I have to admit, I was initially underwhelmed.
So I played Zelda for a couple hours and I felt much better. I'm only about 3 hours in, but the game is very enjoyable thus far.
Later on in the day, I decided to take another crack at Wii Sports. This time I decided to create a Mii character, which I overlooked before. From this point on, things started to improve dramatically. For starters, both my wife and 4 year old son, saw me creating a character and they both wanted to create their own. Even though the characters look very simplistic similar to Animal Crossing, the character creation system has enough variety where you can come pretty close to making a miniature version of yourself.
Also once you have your own Mii character, you can start tracking your stats and progress in Wii Sports, which made it a lot more interesting for me. My wife eventually tried playing Tennis and Golf with me, but it was Bowling that finally got her hooked. It's 4:30am and she just stopped playing. She kept our 4 year son up until 3:30am and made him play until he literally broke-down and started crying. The wifey and I also had some epic battles and she's beaten me the majority of the time.
So Wii is what its advertised. If Nintendo can keep releasing games of this nature with a bit more polish, they'll be on their way to their goal of having a mass market casual game console. Today, my entire family had a great console game experience. The adults didn't feel like they were playing kids games and the kids didn't feel overwhelmed. Can any other console accomplish the same thing?

I wish that were true. The PS2 and Xbox were more similar in the end (pipeline wise). The GameCube had very limited texture / framebuffer memory as I recall and workarounds made the art look like chicken.
I'll probably get a Wii when I move back to North America in a few months. The big selling point for me is the backward compatibility with the GameCube - so I can play Paper Mario and Pikman! (Two of my favourite games).
To me, games drive hardware... PS2 had a better selection of games so more people bought that console. I've owned ALL the systems at one point (while I worked in the biz). The GameCube had fringe and kiddie games. The Xbox had JSRF and better graphics - that's all I remember about it.

LOL. This is a new dimension in aggressive behaviour induced by videogames. Is a 4-year old capable of playing the games?

Wow, it sounded like memories I have of playing Atari 2600 with my family. That was the last time my parents played a video game with me that wasn't Tetris on a Gameboy. B-)

Actually, recently I've been thinking about making a topic asking the devs here when their kids started playing games.
My kid started getting into games about a year and a half ago when he was 2 and a half. He first started playing Super Mario Advance on the Gameboy SP. Then he began playing my DS games like Mario Kart, SMB, and Nintendo Dogs. He actually beat all the mission modes himself in Mario Kart. Console games though were still too intimidating to him until just a few months ago when he played Mario Kart on the Gamecube. Having played the DS version inside and out, he felt comfortable with it. As for Wii Sports, he basically just sticks to Bowling and Golf.

I thought Monkey Ball was great - the 50 minigames have kept us entertained the longest out of anything. Its obviously only fun if you have more than one person though.
Red Steel, we've decided, is definately weaksauce.

A friend of mine (an EMT,) was called to her local Best Buy because of an attempted suicide. Some kid didn't get a PS3, so he slit his wrists.
I can't decide if that's absolutely tragic... or pathetically funny.

Been playing more - Wii sports is way fun - even has a workout mode.
Wouldnt it be really cool if they had an indie game channel? The Wiicade seems like something that could be interesting.

The Virtual Console will basically be this - in addition to classic games.
There are already indies developing for the VC...unfortunately it requires developer acceptance by Nintendo.

Everyone is loving on the Wii, it seems. Game developers are excited about it!
I'm excited too. Maybe I will just buy one. Can anyone tell me yet what the consequences might be for me if I just bought a US model? Could I connect to the US servers and buy things with my non-US credit card (if need be)? I guess my US Gamecube games will work in it at least. What about non-US Wii games?
I want; I want. I just... I always get stuck between the damn regions. I guess you're supposed to just stay in the place you are born in for your whole life.

I think you'll need to import those pre-paid cards from the US. Not 100% sure though.

11-21-2006, 05:10 AM
Gruh, that sounds like a potential damn nuisance. Well, looks like I will have to wait and see for now. I don't really fancy the idea of being restricted to a machine that is zoned for crummy old New Zealand, either. And of course Japanese ones will be strictly squiggle-writing.
Dammit. That's one good thing about the PC at least. None of this silly stuff to worry about.
JPickford
11-21-2006, 05:37 AM
Yeah. I'm not that bothered about buying the cards. I'll just import one and see if I actually use the points (I haven't spent a penny on the 360).
I'll stick with an NTSC machine for the cheaper games launched earlier.

Well, there are still places (amazon.co.jp, iirc) that refuse to sell PC games out-of-region!
- an irritated fan who notices that the BUDGET versions of popular games tend not to make it to the expensive import sites. $80 for a PC game in a language I don't understand is a little too much for me. :)
Anthony Flack
11-21-2006, 06:03 AM
I've actually sent PC games on to people because they couldn't buy them from Amazon.co.jp because they live outside of Japan. It's just stupid.
Anyway, if buying a US one is good enough for you John, that does make me more encouraged to give it a punt as well (plus I have those aforementioned American Gamecube games). Let us know if you source somewhere good to order from...?
voxel
11-21-2006, 06:34 AM
Well, there are still places (amazon.co.jp, iirc) that refuse to sell PC games out-of-region!
Distribution rights for the PC game could be with another publisher outside Japan.
The regional distribution system for games, music, book is totally confusing - why have 6 different distributors for a English language game/CD/book? It probably has to do with marketing and financial liability...
You guys *might* be able to get away with buying points on a US console, so long as you do have/get Visa or Mastercard's where you live. I know I buy from US shops all the time with my Canadian Mastercard. That, and my Japanese PSP has no problems recieving updates from here. Anywhere the net is unfiltered I'd suspect is fine.
Oh, I suppose there's Video signals and power to be concerned about too (composite cabling :(). If NTSC and 110V work where you are, then yee haw.
Anthony Flack
11-21-2006, 05:28 PM
I'm used to dealing with video signal and power issues. That's just technical stuff that you can work around (I'll be needing to do that when I try to run my Japanese consoles in New Zealand anyway). Also, i'm assuming that the Wii (being small) has an external power brick and therefore can be switched.
It's just the nefarious, deliberate internal crippling that is difficult to work around.

Been trying to get a Wii, but still no luck. I'm not into camping out during launch day (or Black Friday; the day after Thanksgiving) so all the limited supply is going to those dedicated few (and the workers in retail that gobble them up before they even hit the shelves). Looking forward to Wii Sports, Zelda, and Rayman Raving Rabbids. Hopefully by Christmas. ;)

Over Thanksgiving one of the teenagers brought their wii and it sure was a hit. Everyone wanted to try it. Really unique and refreshing new spin on games.
Our 18 month old was totally enamoured with it and the kids playing it. Was a pain to keep her safe from the teen kids whacking the controller around wildly. Won't be long till the blood suckers... errr lawyers are all over this one :(

My son has chucked it a few times playing Boweling. The first 2-3 times the safety strap did it's job. The last time I stopped it in mid-air before it smacked me in the face.
I also have come about 3 inches from knocking out my sister-in-law playing Wii Baseball.

Hi Keith,
Oh, strange that you dont have Wii Play in the US yet. Anyway, I had a go at it before, played all the minigames and had a good laugh at it. Do not expect something out of this world, but just some simple games. I did play them alone but will give it a try one of the next days with the kids to see how that goes. I really liked the Pool, AirHockey (always wanted to do a game that had the same feel as the real life air hockey.. this is the best I see so far).. But actually, several of the games made me laugh. Main reason for me to get the game was of course the extra controller. Having the minigames is just a Plus.
Dont think I would have bought a second controller at the moment if it wasn't for Wii Play..
Hope this helped a bit, will report back when I tested it more.

Well, I made a bet with with my 12yr old son that if he got 10 hits for his Little League baseball team I would get him a Wii. Well to my suprise he mustered 12 hits this season. He sucked something awful when he was 10 so I figured this was a sure bet. With the Wii as motivation he actually took baseball serious and was actual a decent ballplayer.
I ended up getting hime the console another Wii remote and a nanchuk?? The extra remote came with 9 games included. This system actually played better then I expected and I really enjoyed it. It is one of the few systems that everyone in the family plays including women. I'm addicted to the golf...
