I am trying to add a sparkle effect to some sprites. I want the gold to appear to be sparkling and shiny. I was wondering if anyone knew how to achieve this effect using PhotoShop or PaintShop pro. I just want a simple 12 animation with the gold to appear to be sparkling. I have thought about using particle effects but it seemed like overkill.

Here are the sprites:

A cheap way is to draw a "sparkle straw" that rotates slightly... blur/bloom it a bit...

Also... your art should have some "shading" - curvature to simulate surface being lit and a hilight.

Don't forget the lens flares! ;)

maybe a few small " X " style sparkle image that scales from nothing to a smallsih size and then back down again (to nothing) and rotates during that scale. Draw it with an additive mode and draw a few of them at random times.

Also maybe mask the coin section out and scroll a small black and white gradient image over the top (also additive or transparent) quite quickly every 3 or 5 seconds. To give it that glint sorta look. (think old arcade games).

I don't think a sparkle effect will contribute much to realistic-looking gold, maybe you could try to show some kind of reflection...

I liked the way how gold looked like in Settlers IV.

I tried using google to find a screenshot of it, this is the only thing I found:

Here are some examples of nice sparkle effects:
