Hi
First of all please let me introduce myself.
I'm 3d artist, game designer and what not with over10 years experience in this industry.
I'm running www.3DRT.com (http://www.3DRT.com) website over 4 years now. It started from a hobby website and grown to what you can see now.
My goal is to build up best quality affordable 3d collections for independent game developers. We are working hard to fill up our library with various contents from animated characters to environment packs.
You can see some shots of our work here:

Hey, I would recommend reading the Portfolio FAQ - your topic is not in "order".

Anyway, I have to say I've seen your art before and think it looks awesome. Just my opinion.

I'd recommend Max's models. We've used his stuff plenty of times for various projects to get them started and will be doing so for the foreseeable future (i.e. until we can hire a full time artist).

Cant go wrong with the price either!

Thanks a lot Max!

Beware. Looking at Max's portfolio will inspire you to make way more games than you have time to do.

If I were going to pick a gamedev Dream Team, he'd be in it.

how much for a custom model?

Don't hesitate to contact me by e-mail posted on a website.
We can propose quite a useful solution like custom non exclusive art that drops the cost of model compared to exclusive art and lets you receive custom art you desire.
I'll explain more here on how we work.
We've almost finished converting most of our models to Torque engine format, an expert was hired especially for this not easy task.
We recently released updates for old assets, so all who owned them before, receive free updates. For example:
We had simple city collection that grown into 3 styles urban set. Day, Night and abandoned cities. What is quite handy is that you simply switch textures without making any changes to mesh and receive complitely new city. There are fly through animations also along with real-time 3D demos.
http://www.3drt.com/3dm/levels/urban_set/29-city-abandoned-burned-destroyed-level-3D-cityscape-29.jpg
http://www.3drt.com/3dm/levels/urban_set/37-city-night-lights-dawn-3D-level-cityscape-37.jpg
We also updated Sci-Fi elite trooper asset, now there are 7 girls with various clothes armors.
http://www.3drt.com/3dm/characters/hitomi/character-trooper-girl-3D-game-collection_02.jpg
And another nice update is our Troll monster model with 20! texture styles now. From shiny cartoony ones to dirty dark horror style.
http://www.3drt.com/3dm/characters/troll/character-fantasy-troll-monster-3d_01.jpg
Upcoming are some fantasy characters: Skeleton warrior and archer, zombie, and a male character set with variety of clothes and armors.

Hehhee... I just had to get the damn city set... dont tell anyone :)

My vote is for "world war two village" set :)

Incidentally max, I think you could push the polycount up a bit on some of the buildings in the city set. I'd like to see individual windows (especially ones that are lit in the nighttime scene) mapped with a seperate texture, so that we can render that with a glow pass.

What other stuff... hmm, I'd like to see some more high-end stuff, particularly something with normal maps etc.. It'd be a challenge for you and a good method of showing artists what is possible with a given engine.

Oh, and some scenes with baked in lighting? :) ok.. a bit of a "wouldnt it be cool if" list.

Great stuff anyway, highly recommended.

It was originally built for bigger city scenes so we kept polycont reasonable for building over a mile scenes. For a driving game for example.
There are specular maps included btw that can be perfectly used for glow pass. As well as for specular effects on windows in a daylight.

Yeah, sorry about that, I was being a bit dim, of course you can just glow/bloom the spec map.

I've been eyeing up some of these models for a while now, even worked them into my design document for a game I've just started with some colleagues.

The drop ships look fantastic, well I was waiting for just the smallest reason to buy these and now there's the 33% discount before January the 1st so it looks like I'll be getting them definately now..

Quick question, is there a possibility that you will be putting up the Sci-Fi motherships that are used in the drop ship videos, the one with the skull and cross bones on the side ?

Anyway, I'm off to buy them now, bye bye

I don't suppose you've got any gun towers knocking about for my hobby project 3D tower defence game ?

I could actually probably afford a few hundred quid for a decent range of stuff, but I can't really justify paying proper money, as it's meant to be a bit of R&R and not a commercial job.

You could look on it as a loss-leader as we currently have zero artists on staff and no black book of good freelancers :)

It now consists of 4 unique meshes + 26 skins for each.
(1 texture pattern is applied to everything with our usual technique.)
2048x2048 texture size for best quality, though can be reduced to 1024x1024 with minor quality loss.
+15 weapons, that use same 26 skins for main mechs. Some of them below.

These are great models! I may end up picking some up during your sale. However, reading the license there is a significant restriction on use of this content.

"a) The products must be a part of the compiled program.

b) Every possible attempt should be made to protect the products from theft by using resource encryption or some other form of concealment.
"

I'm using Torque Game Builder. Would an encrypted zip archive be enough to satisfy these requirements? I'm talking one outside of the EXE, which the EXE would open and decrypt files from. "Part of the compiled program" is a bit vague so I want to make sure this is ok before I buy.

Backov
12-15-2007, 03:23 PM
It's actually a pretty ridiculous restriction. For me that translated to: Use These For Prototyping Only.

lennard
12-15-2007, 09:09 PM
Yep, a deal breaker for me too. You would think that compressed and built into a single data file would be enough but apparently not. I don't understand this - is it really that great of a risk that you would push off the vast majority of commercial developers?

I have to agree as well - could you clarify/specify (or loosen) those restrictions?

Here's the response I got from him via email.

"Hi Joseph
All we are asking for is that models aren't stored in open format, like .3ds.
Using encrypted zip will be enough.
Best Regards
Max Shelekhov
www.3DRT.com"

So as long as you use an encrypted zip, or encrypt each model individually it should be ok. I guess they just don't want users to be able to open the models and steal them. Sort of a pain, but it could be worse.

Sure it will be enough. By program we mean the program folder itself, we dont ask to compile all models into 1 exe file.
I've added note to license agreement to avoid any confusion.

Probably the reason you can't find that e-mail could be it never existed.
We never had such restrictions. As I already answered and as was quoted above, our main concern is to avoid "open format: .3ds .obj .max .X .FBX, etc." existing in your product folder.
This is actually in your interest. Would anybody be happy if models are easily taken from somebody's game folder and freely distributed? And appear in thousands places possible, so your game you bought the models for, will look the same as hundreds other projects. There is no way we can control each released game if they obtained the proper license.
It is clear that person with skills can obtain source files easy no matter encryption, though at least keeping art hidden really helps to save it's value.

Thank you to those who been patient enough to contact us and ask for details instead of guessing. Merry Christmas and enjoy the discount until it is active :D

Could be, it was from a 3d art supplier and I really think it was you guys - my apologies if it wasn't but anyways, it's moot now and I'm happy about that.

What I'm having a problem with might be affecting others so I will air it here. I'm using blender and have downloaded the free sci-fi buildings from the 3DRT website - http://www.3drt.com/downloads.htm - which are in 3ds file format. When I render them the textures don't show up and I can't figure this out or find another simple renderer to solve the problem (have tried Daz, Zbrush, was going to get GMax when looking at the UI reminded me too much of Max and I got the willies). If any art folks out there (3DRT or otherwise) could supply a simple answer then I would be much obliged. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and use Gmax after all?

What I'm looking for is the ability to buy low cost models to mock up game art for my productions myself. When all is said and done I will be offloading to an artist anyhow but I like to get as close as possible before doing so because it saves me time, money and really lets me get what I am looking for as a designer.

I see the point of 3drt. I long ago I had same worries. Finally the encription was not possible in that case, but in general is a good idea, if doesnt kill you interests.

@Lennard

Obviously I cannot tell you to pass me the offending file (nor I have the minimum interest on that, heh, I only tend to fully like my own models ;) ). So, you should be able to have no issue with a 3ds with its texture provided; I will try to help you here (am sort of experienced in Blender -and other packages-) by giving you some tips that are often the key :

- Basic thing (I don't know how skilled are you in Blender). To see models textured you need to be in texture mode! Not in "solid", or "shaded", nor "edit". You need to set in its material (or create a new one if was imported without it) "texface" button pressed(I have the habit of also add the texture slot). Then add in Image Window(where you uv maps or see the already made UVs) type of window, the image you want. In edit mode you can asign a material to any selection of faces. Yet tho the blender's texture mode is not a good way to preview a RT thing...Seing in a render would be closer, curiously. But best bet is to export and just test in your engine. The render tho ensures is all ok. yet tho beware, some artifacts occur in blender with some settings.(new ppl tend to model in a way that leaves normals inverted(which often ends in no texture showing etc) , or double facing producing darkening, etc )

- 3ds is not the best format, tho quite universal. (Have the issues of generating smoothing creases where uv limits are, as cannot have 2 uvs per 3d vertex. Cannot have long names in materials, has general issues in smoothing normals, and, correct me if I am wrong, can't go above 65000 tris.) If the model was thought to have the textures in same folder (usually good thing with any format) , be sure to put them in same folder. If is that it tries to search an specific path as made by the author, that's harder to solve, tho you could apply directly in Blender the texture. Only an issue if you have many textures per model, and don't find a fast way to reasign them all. It'd depend on your patience, then ;)

-often is just a matter of re-apply the texture in Blender. You can preview in a simple converter(there was a free 3ds viewer around).I strongly doubt 3drt would give a 3ds file with issues: if you are not very used to blender but other 3d packages...i know the import into Blender is tricky, no offense here, many really skilled artists went a bit crazy bout this.

Gmax is fine, but imho, these days is worse bet than Blender...imo. You count on way more i/o capabilities with blender now, if learn the deals, and don't fear using free available user made scripts. Quite a lot. I know the place of most. Pm me if so, I wasnt planning to make this help this long, and dont want to put too much words in this very nice thread (top quality artwork here)

For Blender , I better recommend OBJ and LWO. Those are pretty solid. Even better, in both formats. Apart would make happy Poser, Lightwave, Maya, and a legion other users, it is that those import options are very well worked out in latest Blenders.

edit: first of all check simply that you are in the correct texture mode. Even do a render just once imported. And check you have one light previous to that, and in same blender layer , just in case you are rendering only first layer.

Thanks guys - sorry for the delay in reply, out with heinous eye strain yesterday.

Anyhow, 3drt, I think I read your text but didn't zoom up on the rendering - the highlighted render mode made it all clear. Not digging some Blender stuff, forgets import directory so you have to hunt everytime... but I think I will be playing around w/Blender more in the new year as it's pretty cool to be able to buy a model and make game renders for quick prototyping.

Sysiphous, just for clarity, I'm going to be importing this stuff to blender to do renders and then shipping the renders into a 2d engine as static bitmaps.

Thanks again, sorry for being a bit dense.

@3DRT, glad to help 8)

@Lennard, I see..then, you will skip several extra workflows needed for the export. Blender has already enough power to do nice renders. Check AO (ambient occlussion) kind of illumination. Youc an combine with standardlighting in the percentage you want. It gives sort of GI look, often doing quite an eye catching image, if well done. Good lighting and scene composition, etc, is always needed, tho. Anyway, for renders that are surely what you need, ie a prerendered strategy game or similar, if the target resolution is very low in pixels, ao may be not what you wish but raytrace rendering and low antialiasing('OSA' button in RENDER area). At least, I worked doing a prerendered game many years ago, and we used no antialiasing, or very subtle, for the very small units, in max.Plus applied some PS batch complex Actions.

BTW, the rate and kind of improves is hitting the sky right now in Blender. The other day saw incoming glossy reflections and refractions, ray traced soft shadows (could be nice to mix em with the others, but a prerendered game may benefit more of harder shadows) plus was playing with a recent build of normal maps...Which btw works like charm since having your low and hi version models, and even doing a preview render. Really nice. Sorry, am just happy I took the time in its day to learn the basic blender handling (after that any new feature is learnt easy...the first step is harder tho, I admit. A little bit. ) to become my integration package in personal projects. Sorry, became long the blender praise again. I hope all issues are solved, Lennard :)

Well encrypting in a .zip file is hardly encryption, most people could 'crack' most encryption methods used by indie developers easily. I don't think that there is a threat to content being stolen, if there was it would have easily been done so already.

The free animated monster model is only available in the .max file format. None of my tools seem to be capable of handling this format.

From the website: "This is a test model that allows to test compatibility with your 3d engines and applications before purchasing our products."

The models for sale are available in a variety of formats. I could probably use them. However, I can't use the free model to test this.

Took us some time to complete this new Fantasy Dragons collection (http://www.3drt.com/3dm/characters/dragons/dragons-pack-shots.htm), but we are happy with results how these vicious beasts came out.
1 mesh of just 3554 triangles is fitted with 35! different skins (1024x1024). They add a huge variety of realistic, cartoony, dark horror, bone or ice dragons.
Also 2048x2048 .PSD files are included in case you feel like creating your own style textures.
33 cool animations of air and ground actions.
Lots of formats included: .X .max .FBX .ma .mb .ms3d .w3d along with popular torque format .dts.

Yes, those space stations are absolutely beautiful. I'd definitely buy them if I had a use for them. :)

3DRT's space fighters pack is the basis of Mayhem Intergalactic's ship icons (and new title screen) and I've been very happy with them. All the art is of good quality and can be easily customised even by non-artists. There's some ridiculously high number of unique model+texture combinations available out of the box.

That screenshot a few posts back makes me want to make a game about dragons just so I can use those models. :D

3DRT, have any of your clients been using your model + animation packs with Unity3D?

3DRT.com
05-13-2009, 02:06 PM
Dogbert, of course they were. We've already started exporting models to Unity3D format as well.
More than that we were participating in beta testing of Unity3D for PC.

Added lots of new models:
Animated Bikes pack (http://3drt.com/3dm/characters/bikers-gang/bikes-3d-collection-shots.htm)
This one has not just static bikes included but rigged and animated bikers. This allows a quick usage of a model as a single character. So you simply move animated biker on a bike through the 3d scene and play appropriate animations. Can save tons of time in some cases.

The ninjas are cool, would love to put them into the game I'm working on but their animations and moveset really put me off.

If they had more ninja moves like wall running and climbing related ones (hanging off cliff, pulling self up onto cliff, shimmying, balancing on thin ledge) I would definitely buy it, even if it was a bit more expensive.

Your work is excellent though, just throwing these suggestions out there :)

Could you include context for the animations

by which I mean,
instead of just showing the character walk then run then duck then whatever, all on the same spot.

use the camera more,
show the ground so we can see the movement,
spin the camera more, show all over the model, after all thats what we want to see!
how might the model look in 3rd person?, how might it look from a distance?

show the fighting anims against a clone, so model A> block, model B > attack1
model A > attack1, model B > death1

try to show us what transitions are available, can I go from running to jumping? running to duck, duck to attack?

this will allow us to get a good idea of what we can do with your work.
helps us to visualise the character in a situation.

Anyway, I really like your work and look forward to seeing more.

Cheers

Paul.
