Hi everyone,

I'm about to release my latest game, and I need to finalize the name.

A quick description of the game: Gameplay could be described as Katamary Damacy meets Feeding Frenzy. The game is based on the idea of "grey goo". This is the hypothetical end of the world scenario where self-replicating nanotechnology consumes the entire earth. In my game, the player controls a ball of grey goo and they must maneuver around the level eating everything that is smaller than them. They start as a microscopic ball of goo and in each level they grow bigger and bigger until eventually they have eaten the entire earth (and eventually universe).

So that's the basic game. I'm hoping that this game will appeal to both casual gamers (portals) and harcore gamers.

I would like some feedback on the name of the game. The working title has been "Grey Goo". I think this is a good name if you happen to know what grey goo is.. but from what I gather, most people do not know what it is. Right now my top possible names are:

-Grey Goo
-Tasty Planet
-Nanites

I was also considering the name "Eats".. but there was recently a game released with this name (albeit spelled differently) so it's kind of out.

So if anyone has some feedback, or other name suggestions, please reply. Thanks.

Grey Matter? Soylent Grey? Grey's Cosmology?

Chomp!
Gobble!
Gooze (That would be the goo's name.)

I like "Grey Goo" m'self, but then I know what it is...

I'd think it might be good even for those who don't know what it is... especially if your game has any of the madness or humor of Katamari. It's got a sort of quirky japanese feel to it...

I won't ask why the goo only eats things smaller than it...

"Goo Matters!"

Worldeater is unfortunately already taken, but maybe something like "The World for Lunch", or "Hungry Like Grey Goo".

I like the 'Grey Matter' suggestion.

It both describes the organism, and implies that you need to use your own 'Grey Matter' to play the game ...

I don't like the name "Grey Goo" but the suggestions of "Chomp!" and "Supa Gu" sound fun and could fit the game nicely.

I wouldn't want to use grey goo even without the spelling confusion because searching for your game would get tangled up in actual discussions of the grey goo panic... You want to be findable, don't you? :)

While neither is a brilliant title, "Goo Planet" and "Eat The Planet" have the advantage of not returning a zillion high-quality links that would get on top of you in the results.

Nanogoo has a domain squatter... NaNoGu maybe? Short cute syllables.

I think Chomp! is by far the best suggestion I've heard. Seriously think you should go with that.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Yeah, this is one problem with the name "Grey Goo". I did a quick google search for "Grey Goo" vs. "Gray Goo" and the results were 130,000 vs. 90,000. So both are clearly used.

My main problem with "Chomp!" is that you don't really chomp down on anything in the game.. when you eat stuff it's more like you absorb stuff into a puff of smoke. It's more of a "Slurp!", if you will. Or "puff!"

While neither is a brilliant title, "Goo Planet" and "Eat The Planet" have the advantage of not returning a zillion high-quality links that would get on top of you in the results.
I kind of like this style of name. I came up with a bunch like this and "Tasty Planet" was my favourite. The other one that I liked was "Edible Earth". This one might make people think of dirt instead of the planet earth. But that doesn't bother me too much. You do, in fact, eat some dirt in the game.

What does everyone think of these two names ("Tasty Planet" or "Edible Earth")?

I don't like "Tasty Planet" because it sounds like a site for food recipes.

I liked Alien Leaders suggestion of Gooze. It's the only one that stuck in my head after reading them all through.

All the eat the planet type variations sound like some type of eco-terrorist thing. And you don't want it to sound too weird or casual (adult) gamers might be turned off.

I took a look at the games I've purchased in the last couple of years and they almost all have 1 or 2 word titles. Most of them are actual words or slight modifications of actual words.

Yeah, I think Gooze is pretty good as well. However, it doesn't really grab my attention. I think grabbing the users attention is the most important thing in naming a shareware game.. once they have looked at screenshots, read about the game and finally played the game, they no longer care what the game is called. Now "Attack of the Living Lard" grabs my attention.. heh.

I actually came up with another name that I really like, "All Good Things". I think it works with the idea of the game (all good things must come to an end, and I suppose the universe is a good thing). Search engine ranking might not be easy with this one (damn Star Trek episode). Of course there is the obvious pun, "All Goo Things". Don't know if I like that though.

I really like the name "Tasty Planet". I find it positive sounding, a bit quirky, and memorable.
