People often post those "where should I go for hosting" questions. Well, here's another datapoint for you.

A friend of mine is moving his server from someone's data center closet to Advanced Internet Technologies (www.ait.com) in Atlanta. He'd been looking at hosting at Above.Net, but this place is half the cost for double the traffic allowance. For $50/month--currently with a promotional price of $40/month--you get a dedicated Celeron server with a 40GB disk, 256MB of memory, and a monthly network traffic allowance of 1 terabyte.

I don't know much about 'em except for what's on their site. But I suspect I'll be finding out more... because my main email account will be moving too. If it's awful I'll be sure to post and let you know. But it looks fine, and it's plenty cheap, and I bet it would "solve the problem" for most everybody here.

Cheers,

Um,

http://www.aitsucks.com/

A guy on the webhostingtalk.com forums...

"EEEK! did someone say ait? run run run away as fast as you can. They'll most likely overstate your bandwidth usage just so they can overcharge you."

I'm not sure if they're as bad as they used to be, but a while back (apparently) there were a lot of horror stories. Just thought to mention.

I also recommend checking out: www.webhostingtalk.com before making a hosting decision. That places has all the info you need to have when choosing your service provider.

If you pick their 39.95$ offer and pay for 12 months you end up paying 49.95 a month ( the total appears to become 12*39.95 = $599.40 ), funny :)

pat.

Wow, thanks! I steered my server-ownin' pal to this thread and that site. His reaction was "I'm out the setup fee, I guess, but better that than lots of headaches." So you may well have saved him and me both a nosebleed.

He spent some time reading WebHostingTalk, and says his current top choice is Layered Technologies (http://layeredtech.com/). $58/month for a dedicated Athlon XP 2400, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, 1TB bandwidth. I assume they get a clean bill of health at WebHostingTalk, too.

Thanks again,
