I read this on Digg:

source article:

Looks like they host (in an iTunes - style store) files for you for "forever" and you can sell your bits to others as well as "loan" it to them...

Know what? I wouldn't trust DreamHost to host anything of mine. I'm surprised they keep getting brought up, despite the chronic "Dreamhost Sucks!" threads that pop up from time to time.

I got word of this in their latest newsletter (today). It looks interesting but I haven't got time to look into it atm.

Daniel > DHost have had a bad time recently, I was one of those definitely complaining about their downtime and server errors but according to the newsletter is is now all fixed "for good" and they hold their hands up to it being sketchy these past months. Time will tell if it's just PR or not.

Having said this, they have been pretty solid for a while now for me (tempting fate I know!)

Paul, it has been years that I've heard nothing but complaints about Dreamhost. The only positive thing I've ever heard about them is their low price. And this is one time I'm not exagerating.

Good luck! :)

The problem is though they are a very popular service, therefore their downsides are broadcast more. Trust me, before I jumped into their hosting I did research and they usually got very good ratings (along with bluehost and some others). I think that when a server goes down on dreamhost, there are *THAT MANY* users affected that the complaints are quite vocal, compared to "garden shed hosting" with 10 users that no-one hears complain.

I'm not saying there is no truth in what you say (I have witnessed it myself) but more often than not they have been decent. If they act up much more over the comming year (especially once my game is released) then I WILL be looking at some of the other services mentioned around here.

Thanks.

I know that being popular will bring the mice from the woodwork. However, I also know that Lunarpages is arguably among the most popular webhosts, and I've heard one bad experience with them in the 2-3 years I've been with them.

By all means, enjoy their service. But I'm not convinced anyone should be recommending their services at this point...

No I wouldn't be recommending them right now.

And I knew I was tempting fate. ALL of my websites just went down with an internal server error. Their status reports talk of an earlier problem with dreamhosts usual flipant/care-free attitude towards it.

I think I will be looking at others come the renewal time.
