Internships (in general) aren't a way to get any real work out of your interns, they're recruitment tools.

I remember right before the ea spouse thing hit. EA had announced that they were expecting over half of their new hires to come from college campuses. And why not? You dont pay them much, they are ambitous and work hard, what they lack in experience they make up for with effort.

At least that's what a lot of people think, right before it bites them in the ass. :) Lots of studios have difficulty balancing their "expensive expert" vs. "cheap newbie" ratio, but in general it's safer to err on the side of expensive experts, given the relatively small salary differential.
