Oddly enough, I've never seen this mentioned before.

Most portals allow developers to keep their company's splash screen on individual portal releases, but what about indie dev tool splash screens in portal releases? For example, developers who use the Torque Game Builder Indie license have to include GarageGames' TGB splash screen in their games. Do most portals discourage leaving these in (instead just using the publisher and developer splashes)? Are developers forced to purchase the full-blown Commercial license just to get their games considered for portals?

I can already predict some responses… "If the dev team can't afford commercial licenses in the first place, there’s no way they’ll have their games on portals anytime soon," etc. Foregoing the obvious, does anyone have experience with this case? I've always wondered.

If the portal owns a license to , say TGB for example, maybe they don't need to display the logo anymore as they're the ones distributing the game (?)

I can't see any reason why they shouldn't. Take the parallel with movies, tehse days at the beginning you'll see at least 3 to 4 "splash screens" at the start of the movie. one for the production company, one for the direction company, often one for a technology comany (like the THX or Dolby ones you get sometimes) and one for the distributor.
I've seen games that do this too in the commercial space, show say the Acclaim, then Studio, then loading graphic. Thinking about it Burnout 3 and 4 do this, Rednerware, EA and Criterion (although all are the same company now, maybe that makes a differance).

Of course just because something is sensible, doesn't mean that your distributor will allow it. I'd negotiate it with the individual distributor, if they insist that you remove the splash screen, you'll need to negotiate that they will pay for the commercial rights to do so, or go with someone else (or cough up the commercial fee's yourself).
