Hi
This is related to a post in the dexterity forums, but since its closing, Ill just post it here.
Ive got the belkin WAP, but I dont know how to access the website that it says I should if I want to add mac filtering. It says I should goto "192.168.2.254" but it doesnt work. Any ideas what Im doing wrong/how I can update the firmware? Ive downloaded the firmware from the site but its got a ".10" extension which I dont know how to open.
Thanks
usually routers follow a universal ip which is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 most of the time (in my 4 years experiance) its 192.168.1.1 and the firmware update needs to be selected from the routers interface that is how you update it :)

I've got the Belkin Wireless Access Point and had no problems with it.
Typed in 192.168.2.254 in the IE browser and the control panel for it came up fine.
You've probably gone through all of this yourself but one thing to check is that the netowrk connection on the computer it's connected to needs to be on the same subnet as the WAP.
ie set the ip to something like 192.168.2.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0
I was following your thread on dexterity but can't remember too much of what was said so I apologise if it's been mentioned before

Thanks for the replies. :) Sorry this post is a bit late (had to go out for a couple of days).
My connection isnt straight forward because what happens is I have a desktop that has two ethernet ports. A wire connects the cable box to the desktop. From the other ethernet port, another wire connects the access point to the desktop. This means that I have to share my internet connection with the Access point. When I goto the network settings in control panel, I dont know which one to change. (Theres 3 or 4 different protocols). Any ideas?
Sorry if this isnt clear, Im not near the desktop at the mo.

That's ok, the computer our WAP connects to has three network connections! the Wireles LAN, a normal LAN and the ADSL access point :D
On the assumption you're on a Windows system (otherwise I won't be able to help much sorry)...
If you know which network connection the WAP is plugged in to (if you don't know then just unplug the cable and see which one it says is unplugged) then right click -> properties on the correct connection which will bring up the connection properties window for the network connection.
There should be a list of protocols under the heading "This connection uses the following items..." you want to scroll down and select the one titled "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" then click on the "Properties" button.
This will bring a further window with the ip setteings
you want to select the radio button titled "Use the following IP address:" and put the IP address (192.168.2.whatever) and subnet mask (255.255.255.0) in there
Click "OK",your system may or may not need to reboot, but either way when it's ready again you should be able to access the WAP through the browser.
I hope this helps, if I've gone off on one and it's no help at all then I apologise now ;)

this sounds similar to the hell i am experiencing. I have a home desktop thats now plugged into a belkin adsl modem/router/wireless doodad.
That works fine, adsl is up, and my desktop can surf the web.
my laptop only has a wireless conncection, and although it tells me its found my wireless lan, has great signal strength, and is connected, i cant get web access or other internet acces through it.
any ideas?

Thanks for the help Nutter2000. Ill try that as soon as I can get to my desktop. Im running windows ME on the desktop and when I click on "network" in control panel, it doesnt come up with the one you explained (like in my XP desktop). Ill take a screenshot when I get there, but thanks, Ill try that in case I made a stupid mistake (which I probably did :D ). btw, does it matter what the "whatever" is in 192.168.2.whatever? Thanks again for the help.
@cliffski, what OS you running? Not sure if this works on other versions of windows, but sometimes if you right click on the network connection and click on "repair" it suddenly starts working. Thats if a message comes up saying something like "The repair operation is completed. If further probs, contact ISP". Not sure if this would make a difference, but have you tried enabling internet connection sharing on the desktop? (go to Control panel...Add/remove...add/remove windows components. Then add internet connection sharing and then follow the wizard. As I said, Im not sure if that would fix your prob because Ive never used a router/wireless AP but worth a try i guess :) (unless of course, someone else has a better idea :D )

well i just did a total recovery install on my laptop but it still wont connect to the web. I dont really understand whats going on, it claims to have an intel wireless lan thing, but also an intel normal lan connection, which comes up as media disconnected. There is no conventional lamn socket, so im assuming its just a wireless laptop.
you would have thought that a simple "how to connect this laptop to your wireless router" would have been included...
Ive tried repairing connections, manually entering ips, releasing or refreshing IPs... no luck. I think i might just send the laptop back and get my money back at this rate.

Yea, I hate these things - it's all so hit and miss to me, from my lack of knowledge about networking. I got a laptop with wireless modem just a week ago, and the installation for the router (not Belkin) also didn't mention how to get the wireless laptop working. Thankfully, in my case, it just worked! :)

Well I'm not really a network admin but I've set up a few LANs over the years and I found that our wireless network was by far the easiest I've ever setup, pretty much plug 'n' play with a small amount of setting up IPs
Machines running WinXP were very easy to setup, but I've to a dodgy old laptop running Win98 that I can't get to work yet (although I admit I haven't tried too hard)
@Reanimated
ah! Win ME, there's your problem right there, just kidding :D
Send me or post a screenie and I'll see what I can make of it (cue Airplane gag "hat, boat, etc" :p )
no the whatever is whatever ;) doesn't matter what it is, but I'd avoid using 254 as that's the same as the WAP
@Cliffski
can you see the machine you're trying to connect to on the network or ping it?
run -> cmd -> ping [ip address]
if you can ping it then you've got a connection (regardless of what the wireless connection program on the laptop may or may not say) and it's windows arsing about with the internet connection sharing
I'm not too familier with ICS. This seems a reasonable walk through: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/
Couple of things I did spot is that all machines need to be in the same workgroup and ICS automatically sets the server to 192.168.0.1 and the clients to 192.168.0.X so you need to make sure that's not conflicting with anything.
hope that helps

i can get the vaio to work fine if i connect to my router by ethernet. if i try with wireless, it says it has a good connection, but if i set it to dhcp, (which should work with my router) it has an ip of
169.254. etc which is obviosuly some factory setting. it will NOT let me release this IP, and if i try and renew it it says it cant renew it.
the internet is ok, the lan is ok, the wireless is ok. I just cannot persuade this box of crap to realise to use IP over wireless, and to get a fcking new DHCP address. Googling the problem reveals some others with simialr headcahes, and sonys tech support is closed saturadys. Im begininning to wish id bought a dell one.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

@Cliffski
Ah I see, I presume you can't manually use a static IP?
you want a Dell?? what are you LOOKING for no customer service?

aha i fixed iT!
jesus christ that was a nightmare:
The solution:
a) remove all trace of the 'network bridge' crap in network connections
b) assign static ip, gateway, dns
c) TURN OFF the encryoption on the wireless bit of the router (scary)
d) disable the wireless connection, THEN release its IP, then enable it and assign static ips.
it works!
and surfing from anywhere in the hosue rocks. All i need now is to work out how to turn the pesky encryption back on and have it still work, because thats a bit scary...

I took a couple of screenshots of the things under the "network" section.
First One (http://www.realitywarped.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1tcp.png)
Second (http://www.realitywarped.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1pro.png)
The second one, which show the protocols, dont allow me to change the IP address. Also, I havent taken screenshots of the adapters since I didnt think they would matter.
Thanks

i wish i could help. it sounds like your doing exactly what my pc was trying to do (and failing) which is bridge two subnets on the same PC.
I really ought to know all this stuff, as Im an MCSE but that was abck in NT4 days...
if im right and you are trying to bridge two subnets, presuming ones entirely local to your network, you can renumber it howveer you like (so you dont need to bridge them at all).
Just an idea.

Bah, damnit there's definately something wrong with the email notifications on this new forum!
Anyway, sorry for the delay in replying Reanimated
I don't think you can modify the Internet Connection Sharing ones I think that's the sole preserve of the almighty windows (or something like that)
but the ones you want to modify are the TCP/IP protocol, however, I'm not sure which adapter you want, at a guess the Netgear one is your internet connection so you want to change the Realtek adapter
