Man, I hope I can make that date...

Well, I've got my work cut out for me.

Interestingly enough, the rules specify which web browsers and plugins must be used, but there is no mention about OS. So I can submit the game as a Gnu/Linux-only or a Mac OS X-only or a FreeBSD-only game? Am I supposed to expect that they'll be able to provide their own systems OR I am supposed to provide an entire OS and possibly hardware for them, too?

I dont understand their rule about not being connected with a publisher. Does this rule out games with a retail publishing deal? Surely not.
I'll be entering Kudos, maybe Democracy too, as I missed it last year, although the thought of having to loiter by a stand at a trade show and be a salesperson doesnt fill me with calm happy thoughts. Is it as nerve wracking as it sounds?

No, actually; it was a lot of fun :) We loitered around and chatted with other indies, and showed off our game... we had fans of Fizzwizzle come up and tell us how much they love the game, etc.

Definitely a good time :)

Actually I think the toughest thing would be to "conduct oneself in a manner that upholds the good name and reputation of Sponsor, the Conference, and the Contest".

What!? No getting drunk and making an ass of myself? That's it. I'm not going :D

Alas, I suspect I will not have enough ready of my current project by deadline for it to be worth my trouble to submit it. It's innovative - in the sense that I can't find anyone else who's ever done this before, in English at least - but probably wouldn't be *appreciated*, and artwork won't be ready in time. :) But since I probably won't be finished until 2007, there's always next year...

(I've never really understood what they mean about the level of readiness required. They insist feature-complete beta, but then they say you need only one level? Confusing for games that don't have levels or equivalents.)

Or how about the platform requirements? PDA is listed, but if you have an "obscure" PDA, please provide hardware? What's obscure? Would the Zaurus be considered obscure? What about certain Palm devices? GP2X?

Yeah, the requirements confuse me, too. They say that the game must be "beta or better", and "beta" in my mind == feature and content complete. Yet they ask that a minimum of one level is completed.

I'm interpreting that to mean that gameplay must be final with one completed level. I'm starting to get the impression that the IGF simply adopted this rule to prevent a flood of College-Kid-Barely-Games that the commitee will have to sift through.

All the same, I'm happy to see that the requirements were not as bad as I thought. If they were using my definition of "beta" above, I'd be guaranteed to miss that date.
