To those of you working on a Match-3-esque 'guaranteed seller' title...
Do you have another game? One at the back of you mind? A game that won't stop scratching away at the back of your brain? What is it?
C'mon. Share. Given the choice, which game would you love to make?
I've been contemplating a match-4 game. Match-4's will be a revolution in match gaming.

RPG. Like early (III-VI) Ultimas. Or first SpiderWeb games. Totally 2d, oldschool tiled art. And pure fun. But man, that needs time... and I doubt it would bring me enough $$$ to survive. So I'm back to my match-3 (I'm starting to hate it... the last 5% of the work left probably).
cheers,

Yes I do, but I can barely make a decent match 3 game, let alone the game I really want to make. Its an issue of costs, time, skills and motivation :).
I've been contemplating a match-4 game. Match-4's will be a revolution in match gaming.Actually I've been making nothing but match 4's recently (Boxen, current game I'm prototyping.) Must mean I'm really innovative :). Besides this one though, most other projects "in the pipeline" are not matching games, and some of them are not very casual either.

The game I had originally thought of when I thought I was going to go indie is a puzzle game featuring cute colored droplets of water, which you must guide from their tanks at the top of the screen to appropriate recepticles at the bottom. There would be pipes and gears and escalators and slides and I was even thinking of a mechanic where you'd have to combine drops of different colors to make the right color for the bottom tank, or combine drops to make bigger drops that you could then use to launch other drops to their destinations using see-saws. I never came up for a name for it, and I certainly never finished it, though I did do some prototyping for it. I'll probably get back to it at some point.

Well, I'm not making a match-3 right now, nor am I making a guaranteed seller, so I probably don't qualify, but I've had a game I want to make in my mind (usually more in the front than the back - I can't stop thinking about it) for the past four years. Sadly I just don't have the resources to make it.
One day...
...probably when I win the lottery. :(

LOL! I was just thinking it would be a game you could make. :)
I thought your game Kudos was much broader than dating. Isn't it about life choices that make your character happy or unhappy? Or are you thinking of your next game? If thats the case, I should get off my arse and make it before you do. ;)

You should try "Sprung" for Nintendo DS. It's one of the few dating games released in the states. Japan has TONS of those games though. Sprung seemed a bit higher quality to me than the Japanese games I've seen, because there were lots of subtle cues in the animation to where you could say the same thing in three ways (giving the words different meanings) based on the animation alone. Lots of work put into the animation. Most Japanese dating games give you single frames that show if someone is happy, mad, embarassed, etc.. I think Sprung is one of the better dating games out there.

There are certain circles where talk like this will get you shot. Also, I think you're the first person I've ran into that said Sprung is good. I haven't tried it so I have no comments.

(god I am sad puppy)
I've always wanted to make a RPG or RTS, but the quality of today's games is so high now that I've become a little demotivated. It just doesn't feel the same when a game looks like Dawn of War instead of Dune 2. However, we will be making a RPG anyway using the resources we've got ( http://www.dawnofdaria.com )... RPGs take forever to develop, though, so we need to develop it while we make match-3 games at the same time. I've heard of about several companies that have tried to make RPGs and failed :S

ha. who really knows what kudos is about? certainly not me. The next game would be more about dating, but kudos has to sell well to make that viable, and who knows what will happen?

Hard to say it :
- one of the games i'd like to make and that is big is an RPG in a verry ...hu....exotic world. I tried to make it two years ago year but did'nt have enough time to manage the team, program AND write all the designs :S
- one game that i'd like to do is about ... something like telekynesis : you control a humanoid with the left joystick and a big massive block of metal with the right joystick controller. A beat them up in 3'rd person view. The thing is to make it verry instinctive...
- one other game i'd like to do is a mmorpg where you only play thaumaturges (poeple who make miracles : magicians, mages, shaman, sorcerer etc) and you have a big big big isle-city that is the Magic Academia where everybody starts.
Then the interresting part is that the Academia send their magic-men groups of in missions in others planes and places, for temporary missions, with a big quest to achieve, for about 3 months.
About 200 or 400 players have then the right to go to the place that is a separated server where a big quest is ready and can be achieved....and others things
well, its hard to explain it quickly...
...
i think too much hu >__<;;

I'd like to write a graphical adventure game at some point. I realy love the old lucasart adventures, and I like to make something like that. Problem is that they are very content heavy, and I just wouldn't have enough time to do it justice.
If I had about $50 million (or even a million) to sink into it, I'd be making the nice MMOACSH game my partner and I have been kicking around for about three years...
(that's Massive Multiplayer Online All-Cooperative Survival Horror)...
In the meantime (until I have the cash) I'll just have to be content with waiting for someone ELSE to cash in on this genre (so that I can freaking play it already!)...
:: waits ::

Maybe economics have hindered my abilility to dream, but a $50k project that earns $500k, or just profiting ($50m to... 1 billion dollars!... seems a bit much) has to be somewhat attractive too. My appologies for bringing the dream back to our galaxy. Though they do say, think big. ;)
Maybe I'm a little strange to want success across several mediums. Engrossing myself in art and music, beyond my familiar land of code, has certainly pushed my interests in many directions. I'm not all about financial success, but success in business is certainly a medium I'd like to explore. :D
Of course, if I had to make my super game, it'd be some sort of cyberpunk RPG. After playing Neuromancer on the C64, and later Shadowrun on the SNES, I've been fascinated with the idea of describing hacking as something more interesting than shell scripts or Power Ranger's esc fighting in a "computer". Johnny Mnemonic, Lain, even Hackers and Swordfish in its bastardizations of it, certainly get the brain juices flowing.
Definately not making a money spinner, but I'd love to create a browser based Shining Force style MMORPG (engine is done :p), but that has to wait til I have more bandwidth ;)

If bandwidth is all you need you might wanna try www.dreamhost.com if you use the coupon code super777 to get $97. Their basic plan for a year costs $22 or so and gets you 1 TB of bandwidth per month, plus you get more each week you stay with them.
I certainly would hate for a good indie game (especially one that I might enjoy) not being made due to bandwidth issues.
Thats very reasonable, I'll have a word with our artist to see if he is up for doing that next :)

I'll admit it: I have an RPG in me that has been wanting to get out for about 15 years now... (I seem to be in good company here). The "game design" (both in my head, and extensively documented) has evolved during that time, but some of my goals have remained suprisingly constant over all this time.
Having shipped projects for work that are larger than what this would be is a double edge sword -- on the one side I've got experience with just about every aspect that would be needed to make it. on the other side, I know from experience what it would take to make it-- and that is daunting, thus I've chosen not to persue it.

You should play Psi-Ops and Second Sight. They both play just like that and came out at around the same time (a couple of years ago). Psi-Ops is more action oriented, and Second Sight goes more stealth (at least at first). I liked Second Sight more.

Hahaha well, it's got problems (and I didn't play all the way through), but I greatly admire that they created and released it. It's obvious it had love put into it. Most people won't like it, because, it's a dating sim. No shooting, no leveling, no military, no puzzle, no action, etc... Lacking those features automatically makes some games boring to some people. There IS a market for it, though. Too bad most guys don't want to admit they like a "dating game". It kinda kills word of mouth. Like the guy who brought it up in this thread said, "the chicks would love it". Guys wouldn't want ot admit to liking and buying a dating game in the US and Europe.

I'm talking about hardcore Japanese dating sim fans. Like the people on the Lemmasoft forums that make their own ren'ai games. When this game came up in a panel for the indie game developer Okashi Studios (http://www.okashistudios.com/) at Anime Central this year, they ripped into it. They hate it so much because they love games of that type, not because they think dating games are boring or lame. While some of this is probably because the game is more Western style and not steeped in anime conventions, the problem seemed to mostly be because the gameplay sucked. Afaik, the game is very linear, if you make a wrong dialog choice at any point you "die" and have to restart. This was a complaint has come up EVERYWHERE. This is very different from most Japanese visual novels, which give you multiple valid paths, or dating sims which have a bunch of stat management and different strategies to get the girl (or boy.)
Although I can't play it because I don't know Japanese, the Tokimeki Memorial really seems to be the best in the genre and way ahead of all other games of this type in terms of gameplay. Afaik, most of the localized offerings are not very good. I don't really like visual novels, the fan translated demos I've played have been like boring, long anime with no animation and a "decision" every hour so, but a dating sim along the lines of Tokimeki would be a pretty cool thing.

Maybe these aren't original either, but I could put a lot of interesting new elements into them:
- Platform game. Always been a big fan since the C64 days (Turrican etc) and I'd love to make one. I made a demo one on http://www.greyaliengames.com called Iron Fist.
- Vertical Shoot'em Up. Been a fan since Flying Shark. Would need some hot graphics though and great particle effects to cut it these days.
- Action RPG. Basic RPG elements but more like Gauntlet in gameplay, except with more exploring. Overhead 2D or semi-isometric or something (Ultima style).

We just made the game we wanted to make as our first indie title. It took over two years, and we're skint, and there were a couple of moments along the way when we thought, "why didn't we just knock out a couple of three month puzzle games like everyone else does, to get a bit of cash?"
We would never have made a 'match 3', or any clone of an existing game, but we made a deliberate choice to start off with a solid, substantial title, almost as a statement of intent - to prove to ourselves that indie games could be 'proper' games, not just simple, derivative puzzle games. We've even got two or three simple puzzle game ideas which we'll probably develop next, but which we felt would be 'timid' projects to start off with.
But now Naked War is (virtually) finished I think we did the right thing. We've made probably the best game we've ever made in over 20 years of game development, and had the most enjoyable and rewarding (not financially, but in other respects) working experience of our lives.
Now if only we can make some money...
