Hey,
I'm looking for inspiration for an action side scroller. I was a fan of Turrican a while back and am thinking of something along those lines (terrain based, NOT air-bourne or space-bourne). Anyhow, if you can suggest some out there in 3D or 2D, modern or classic, AAA or indie, i'd appreciate it.
thanks!

Maybe the Metroid series? Perhaps they're a bit too RPGish though, lots of collecting of suit add-ons etc.

My favorite would have to be E.V.O. Search for Eden (SNES).

I would love to create a game like this. I still own it for SNES. The way you evolve through the ages is great, used to always play when I was younger.

Oh... the memories! Turrican was great. Um... Shadow of the Beast (loved parallax)... Dizzy... for a slightly different angle Silkworm (with the jeep and the plane). I liked the ones that had a good height component - felt less limited. Actually I can't recall any more which ones scrolled. Dumb, huh?

Creatures (http://webhome.idirect.com/%7Esnedeljk/creatures-c64/creatures1.html) and Mayhem in Monsterland (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=1625) on the C64 were pretty nifty too. (Screenshots through the links.)
River City Ransom was one of my favs as a kid.
Shinobi Arcade and Revenge of Shinobi Genesis were both amazing. Strider was also excellent.
Golden Axe was also great!

Also, I have a soft spot for Ganbare Goemon and Rolling Thunder.

I couldn't disagree more. It certainly was a great tech demo for the Amiga, but as a game it was pretty crap. Beast II was better, but still not really a great game by any stretch of the imagination.

LOL, I agree with you. Amazing tech but a surprisingly boring ass game.

sorry no screenies:
Turrican I and II
Jim Power
Golden Axe
First Samurai
Flashback
Gods
Toki
Torvak the Warrior
Zool
Strider (maybe)
Impossamole
Dizzy
Fire and Ice
Chuck Rock
Earthworm Jim (megadrive)
These two were vertical scrolling platformers (but were great):
Rainbow Islands
Rick Dangerous
For me Turrican is a "model" game it's so damn perfect.

gameplaywise beast 1 and 2 wasn't very good, but beast 3 was an almost perfect game imho. was a nice mixture of action gameplay and some interessting puzzles. the graphic and music was als damn good.
