It was a coin operated 2D space combat game in the 80's. The screen was round and the ship rotated around the edge of the screen a full 360 degrees. The enemy ships came at you from the far distance and you could start to shoot at them right away but they were hard to hit until they got closer. If anyone remebers the name of this game please let me know. :)

I think the game that matches your description is Tempest.

Both answers are potentially correct -- Tempest if it was wireframe style vector graphics, Gyruss if it was raster based. Probably Gyruss since the Tempest enemies were basically just abstract shapes and not so much 'ships'.

Since there's no mention of the webs that are Tempest's trademark, I reckon it must be Gyruss.

I think SWAT Kats for the SNES had similar gameplay at one point.

Gyruss.
GREAT game :-) I dumped a TON of quarters in to this as a kid at my local movie theater game room.
You can take a gander at it in MAME.

Here are the relevant KLOV pages on Gyruss (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8060) and Tempest (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=10065). See anything familiar?

Gyruss is the game I was thinking of. I want to play it for research purposes. The link I gave above leads to a JAVA version you can play in a webpage, but the silly thing doesn't get past the first screen.
EDIT:
I got it to start this time but all you can do is move the ship.

I was able to play it, but the controls are very poorly mapped

Gyruss is included in the Konami Arcade cartridge for GameBoy Advance... I bought this online very cheap.

I'm going to assume you're not joking, and you really are the last person here to have heard of MAME.
Yes, you can play the games. Many, many games, and in the majority of cases they run absolutely perfectly; just as you remember them.
As for where you get the games - well, it's a shady legal area I'm afraid. It used to not be a big deal, when emulation was an obscure hobby. But now, it's become a big deal. So you get the games wherever you can find them.
I don't think a Gyruss rom would be too hard to find, though. Install MAME32, do a search for gyruss.zip (it shouldn't be a very big file), and drop it in the roms directory. And there you go.

The very first result returned by a google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=mame&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=G).

Yeah I had never heard of it before. The MAME site confused me, because they said download this MAME thing but don't ask us about the games for it. Now I get what its all about. It is quite an education for a budding casual designer. :)
BTW have you guys heard of a coin operated game that was sort of like GunSmoke but you were a post apocalyptic dude running through a town where everyone was trying to kill you? You could also jump into a buggy and when it took too much damage you had to bail out or die in the explosion. I would love to make a similar game to that.
EDIT:
I found it. A truely awesome game. :)
