I want one of these:-

Me wants! :D.....

The DJing bit looked interesting. If Nintendo can make one like that for the DS, I think that'll fly. Hopefully, they'll put in a save feature.

An audio DAW with all touch screen? Now that would be awesome.

Not to mention basic painting and Photoshop stuff, no more MSPaint disaster art.

No, THIS (http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/08/japans-real-3d-image-projector/) is the future. ;) (But if you're into that touchscreen stuff, you'll like this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6185946983584477029).)

Any special reason why he's wearing those glasses, I wonder?

I met some guys from Sony labs once (about 3 years ago I think), and one of the things they were talking about that they were working on was something that sounded exactly like that touch screen, with the multiple points, scaling and rotation methods, etc.

Any special reason why he's wearing those glasses, I wonder? Each dot is a tiny explosion, and those look like protective goggles, so... The technology doesn't require glasses to percieve the 3D, if that's what you're implying.

No, I wasn't. I was implying that he was wearing the glasses in case their crazy laser exploder machine melted his eyeballs.

to carry this further, think of this.
if we ever get some good holograph type of display going, then technically, I would suspect this 2d touch screen concept thing could be done in 3d, where you can manipulate 3d space in front of you..

then you can have LOTS of fun..
you could potentially create a large space the size of a room, and if it were safe, you could stand inside the hologram thing and interact with everything..
o_o..

you could have a device which displays a bookshelf and you can go over and order a book instantly online and have the holographic book appear on your shelf and be capable of opening it and reading it.

you could have various holographic toys to interact with, like a ball you can throw around the room..

you could have sword you can pick up and hold and npcs which jump out from the walls and you can fight them. The walls could be holographic 2d displays (like 2d interactive guis in 3d games), and it could then look like you are out in some other location or envirement..

They already have that, it's called a Holodeck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodeck).

Oh wait...that's science fiction :)

yeah, but I'd think that if a decent holographic display is made, someone would eventually create the means to interact with it by physically touching it.

Anthony Flack

You could touch it, but you'd never feel it. And you don't understand love, Spock.

@Anthony: Thanks for the laugh! :)

The multitouch stuff looks really cool. Cool demo anyhow. But I think you would get fatigued pretty quick after using that for a while.

As for the holographic stuff.. one thing that they don't mention is that this type of technology can't do occlusion (well they don't really give any details, but I'm pretty sure). So if you have one object in front of another you will still be able to see the both objects. Or if you have a solid object you will be able to see the front and back side of the object.

they are already prototype of those kinds of games but its not done trough holographic imagery yet. The way it works is like regular virtual reality but isntead of rendering the whole scene it only adds some elements like power ups and ennemys. The thing detect the sourroundings and adjust the point of view of the rendered elements to match your actuall point of view so it looks "seamless".

The prototype's graphics are absolutly horrible but you can imagine that in 10 to 15 years the rendered elements will be truly seamless and you will have lots of trouble guessing what is rendered and what is actually there.

They will be used for a lot more than games. All sorts of informations can be added on top of "reality".

there is already a game engine for it... but it looks horrible.

yeah that first video had me hooked. I guess the screen would get pretty greasy over time. It needs to be combined with nanobots that clean up the grease periodically.

Didn't we already have this discussion in the Revolution thread? :)
