I'm curious as to how many people are actually making their entire income from sales of games that they've made and independently published ? If you make enough that you could even though you don't, then that also qualifies as a 'me'.

There's a lot to be said for not being a wage slave, but there's also a lot to be said for paying the mortgage. Who out there is actually doing this style of development 'for real' ?

I'm still stuck in the halfway house of being a contractor/freelancer. I can work from home, but I still have far more limits on what I can do than would someone who is truly independent. Boy would I love to fall into the latter category!

Thanks.

I am currently making my entire income from the online sales of my game Lux. However, this info isn't really complete without mentioning the things that I do not have: a wife, any kids, a mortgage, or a car.

To paraphrase another thread... I wish my name was "Dustin":)

No sex, living with the parents and having no car?

Thanks, but I'm happy being me. :P

Funny, I read Dustin's statement as "lots of safe sex, no mortgage, using parent's car for free" :)

Funny, I read Dustin's statement as "lots of safe sex, no mortgage, using parent's car for free" :)I don't live in the same city as my parents, so I don't get much use of out their car. My methods of transportation are my legs, the bus and the subway (a metropass ia quite cheap in montreal). As for the sex, it was plentiful until my girlfriend took off to do her last year of university in Europe. The fact that I am fulltime for my own business means that I can go visit her whenever I want though. :D

Really? :) Unless they have a -wildly- successful game I don't think indies get as many holidays as regular employees of larger companies. They just can't afford to lose the development time on the next title.

Am I wrong on this?

As for the rest, I was just having a laugh. No offence meant (in case you took any).

I don't think it's impossible. I was having a wild fantasy a few days ago about living in Italy while being an indie. Just need a laptop and a broadband connection where I land, and there you go. Of course I'd also need a wildly successful set of games making me huge amounts of money... but hey, I can dream can't I? :p

I'm thinking of moving to Portugal (from the UK) for the same reasons.

Nice people, excellent climate, progressive country without the fascism we have here, cheaper living, much cheaper housing, good food, no crime,...

Hmmm, why am I only still *thinking* about it.
