As a birthday gift to my older brother I am transferring a commercial audio tape he made 21yrs ago to CD format. I am currently using audacity to create my wav files. The question I have is there a way to have the tracks split automatically using some sort of software analyze or do I need to manually split up my tracks?

Thanks..

you mean during each pause between song ? you want that a seperate track / file ?

Record the whole tape than split it up , its not that time consuming. i know in sound forge you can chop a long recording and have automaticly saved in many files based on sound level , when it drops below a certain sound level it saves the following bit in another file and so on but i dont think audacity can do that .

Yeah that is exactly what I mean. Where can I pick up Sound Forge?

Unfortunately, I don't know a thing about Audacity. But, I do know that in Adobe Audition (was Cool Edit) you can add track markers. I use it to create my demo reel cds - I have one long track made up of a bunch of clips that fade in and fade out, and I add track markers at each fade in-out point so that a person can skip around if they want. If you decide to try Audition, you can PM me and I'll give you detailed instructions.

I finally got it figured out. I first had to do a fit to window view, and then it becomes obvious where the breaks should be. Audacity has a Add Track Label feature and I just selected the correct points. Then all you need to do is a export multiple and it will create the files split at your markers.

Thanks for all your help..

Is it worth the upgrade to adobe audition? Im still using cooledit 2000 with the studio plugin.
