I wondered who here has successfully released some big games - 3D extravaganzas that take on the big boys to some extent, instead of small 2D games etc.

Did they do OK?

I guess it depends on your definition of big games.

I've seen some posts about very successful games here, but I don't know if those are the games you are looking at.

Now admit it d000hg: You are planning to make a 3d space-MMORPG/Egoshooter and are looking for some successful indie projects to get motivated?

Star shatter comes to mind.

I think its developer (milo) posted here in the forums.

I'm thinking our game will be pretty big. It's hardcore, not casual.
No, it's not released yet, but the next demo is almost ready.

1- it's immersive 3d
2- it's multiplayer
3- it's original IP, already tested
4- the character control is custom and sweet

... all i wanna say for now ;)

A couple of the most ambitious downloadable games have seen are Tribal Trouble (http://www.arcadetown.com/tribaltrouble/game.asp) and Trash (http://www.inhumangames.com). Each was years in the making by small teams.

Not quite - a 3D RTS though. I've heard of Trash - that will do as competition I guess!

check out Tribal Trouble too, which is a great looking indie RTS.

I'd also like to say Battlescape, but that's way off.

There's also War World (http://www.warworld.net/). However, it's been temporarily pulled because the fans weren't terribly fond of it, so they're reworking it.

Wow, that looks awesome.

Anyone here made stuff like this, or are you mainly going for the casual market?

There's a world of room between games like War World and casual games.

This thread is probably looking for stuff remeniscent of AAA titles, like a certain Vegitarian Grand Theft Auto'ish game (http://www.steermadness.com/).

But I swear, Geneforge 3 (http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/geneforge3/), despite it's dated 1995 (?) RPG look feels huge. I swear, I must have been close clocking in 8 hours with the demo, before I simply moved on to the next round up game.

I'm working on a project that is totally unlike anything anyone has ever done!

... Well, okay, that's a *slight* exaggeration. And with the money problem it may fall apart and never be finished (At least the GT award paid the rent this month. :) )

The end result will be larger than your standard downloadable game.

It would be REALLY big if I could swing full voice acting, but I suspect that's unlikely.

It will not be at all the kind of game d000hg is looking for either. :)

We (team of two developers) are making a First Person Shooter and as far as I know we are the only indie team making one, at least in this forum anyway. My friend started working in his engine late 2004, I joined the project early may 2005 and designed the game. The creative phase is now over, we already know what the game will be about, we're now finishing the engine and the current deadline is June 1st 2006.

Plenty of FPSs out there my friend.

Purge was one a few years ago.

More recently there is a western one in development.

There's also Dark Horizons: Lore

Not to mention War World, which is technically third person but may as well e a FPS.

and of course, Starshatter last year...

Not to mention the FPS space games that aren't quite as highly detailed as the ones mentioned above, including Void War, Acamar Rising, Cell Block Squadrons...

Did I burst your bubble yet? :)

OK, then i'm gonna say that to reduce artload we added many concepts from RTS, so we can call it FPRTS. Let's see What you got now? :D

(I've played Dark Horizons, it's 1 good game!)
