My page has been around a long time and I have links all over the place and thus it's not too hard to get listed in the search engines and I have a reasonable idea how to organize the content on the site.

But that other thread asking how to get listed got me curious. What *IS* the best way to deal with a brand new page? and what are the best steps to follow with a brand new domain? Say I start a page that is for games in flash and I want to get it listed for some fairly uncompetitive search phrases reasonably quickly..

1) What can I do to speed up the page's listing?
2) How much will limited content affect a page? Say it's one page long and has no links?
3) How will a page be affected if it's new and has little or no links to it from other sites? and barring ads or link trades is there any way to get into the database on even very unusual/uncompetitive keywords?
4) How long should I wait for a new listing to appear? What's a reasonable length of time to expect to pass before I see my site starting to get listed?
5) If the page has few links going to it, aside from link trades how can I improve the speed it gets listed at? Do ads help? For example... Would.. google adwords affect how the site is listed on other search engines?

Ok you search engine experts.. what do you have to say about the special case of new domains?

Hi,
If you are talking about a new page for Twilight, just add a link from your front page.

Google's last visit to Twilight was yesterday so when you add the link now, you can be sure it's in the database within a few days.

Let the spiders find you naturally via links and avoid a static non-changing site otherwise the spiders will get bored and come less often.

What about brand new domains that have nothing linking to them? (at least not yet). If this is your very first website ever, what can someone do then?

The fastest way is definately just get your site linked by a well-spidered site- specifically right on a front page.

Next thing you know you're in every search engine... and yes, I have found that the more I update my site the better my SEO rank... So update often and add content.

and Add content... that is important. Not just a one hit sales page. Content.

Add Content.

Have I said that enough? Because I think ADDING CONTENT is very important and shouldn't be overlooked.

PS: Add content.

Simple, do whatever humanly possible to get links asap. Get in bed with other webmasters at your level and sleep your way up the ladder (bad analogy? you be the judge).

Earlier today I got a Google Alert for a phrase that also happens to be in my signature at these forums. The indexed page is from a thread I responded to two days ago. So if you put a link in your IndieGamer signature, the search engine will pick it up pretty quickly.

I put up www.casualgameblogs.com last Wednesday night, announced it in a thread here and on my blog, and had Google search hits by Saturday...
