Anyone know of any good source for Flocking or Swarm Algorithms?
Thanks

Crudviola. I KNOW there's at least one article in the Game Programming Gems series on flocking, but my copies are all at work, and I'm (goshwow) at home. If you have the GPGs or know someone who does, check them out - volume 4 contains an index of the first four volumes, so that's where I'd start.

Does the book explain it enough to implement it? Or is it just abstract and high level?

Take a look at OpenSteer (http://opensteer.sourceforge.net/).

Might be helpful, too.

Wasn't there a birds example in the Direct X samples? Not sure if it's still there. I used that for getting units to stay in formation on a PS1 RTS game. :)

Take a look at Programming Game AI by Example (http://www.ai-junkie.com/books/toc_pgaibe.html). The software for the book is downloadable from

There's some pretty useful stuff at http://www.riversoftavg.com/downloads.htm#Free%20Components%20With%20Source, especially if you use Delphi like I do :o If not the source might help you a bit

I did a swarm of bees recently. Even the original boids algorithm was more than I needed, but I found some good reading here:
