View Full Version : Video Capture

Hi guys--

I'd like to capture some footage of my game, and edit it together into a short video.

All the capture software I've tried is more for demonstration of applications, and therefor framerate isn't important to them.

Anyone know of some free software that'll record my game at 60fps?!

Cheers,

Dan

Fraps 2 (http://www.fraps.com) always does a fair job. Its not free, but on the other hand, its not expensive either (about £20 I think).

Try the demo and see how you get on.

I'll second Fraps. I used that for all the movies that were on Game Savant and any movies I do for my new site. It's easy to use and works well.

I liked FRAPS but ultimately went with GameCam Lite. Maybe because it was only $10 and did both multiple resolutions but multiple audio sample rates.

Here's a vid I made using it (edited with just Movie Maker)

The artifacts you see are due to compression...something I'm still trying to find a good balance for.

I guess for comparison here's the latest movie I did with Fraps:

Bone (http://www.1goodgame.com/game/bon_movie.wmv)

As with yours, compression is because of Movie Maker squishing it down a little. Edited with Movie Maker also...

Is open source, free. But have not tested.

what computer speed is needed to capture at such a decent frame rate ? i tried a couple of shareware softwares to capture 1024x768 on a sonoma 1.7ghz with 1gig ram , wich might equal a 2.4ghz p4 , i think , and the frame rate was 8 or 10 fps at the very best.

That game looks sweet btw, the game i played the most this month is Mercury on the PSP . It looks just as fun but with a ball instead of a liquid blob of mercury.

the machine I used to capture was just an AMD 3200+ with a gig of ram and of course GameCam Lite.

and since you mentioned, yeah the game is pretty cool. My first big project I worked on with SFX, Dialogue, and of course Music. It doesn't get a lot of attention because it was a student project. But it's the most polished student project I've ever worked on! y'all should check it out. http://www.litteratus.net

The timing of this thread is just perfect! I'm looking for a video capture app as well - I just always assumed FRAPS was the only option. Getting both now - I'll see which one I like the most (although, I do have to say, I like the delayed capture of GameCam - will have to test).

One question, however - without shelling out some four-digit sum on Premier, which application works well (and is cheap/free/open source) that I can use to edit videos (pref proper non-linear editing).

Thanks!

I use Movie Maker, which comes with WIN. And I can't think of the one that comes with Macs...iMovie? iLoop? iMovieTracks Pro? iloopgarage? It's on the tip of my tongue.

Though I was searching for different tools and found this one which I haven't tried yet... but it looks good.

They also make a desktop screen capture utility that I'll probably try too BECAUSE IT'S ALL FREE!

Thanks, AnthemAudio. Yea - it's iMovie, and I completely forgot about it. I'll try it and Movie Maker - see what I like. I'll check out your links as well.
