Ok, so in my shmup currently I have a nifty backround that scrolls left and right (if you move left it scrolls to right and vice versa)
Now the enemies still stay in their spot.
Do you think that's weird? Or should the enemies move too in respect to the player and backround movement?

They shouldn't. There are one or two games, which do that and they are really bad. They also move the bullets around (obviously) and its really irritating.
Well, there is no need to ask such things. Just prototype and check if it feels right. I mean... thats what prototyping is good for.

I prototyped already, and it felt odd at first but then I got used to it right away and I think the moving backround is neat. The bullets and enemies dont, but if you move left or right the backround scrolls left and right and it looks neat.

In the shooters I'm working on where you have a repeating scrolling space background, stars, etc.. the background moves the opposite way the payer is moving the ship. It gives a slight overall feeling of "flying" around. ;)
Another project, the players stays dead middle of the screen and everything else scrolls around the player.
Shooters are fun.... ;)

Well for a galaga clone it's not really a problem, the background is just a bonus, players are used to seing the enemies aligned in rows or disappearing at the bottom of the screen and reappearing at the top...
