It would be cool if you could swap and keep whatever you swap permanent and if you match 3 then have the 3 you just matched changed into 3 random but predictable colors but with a layer removed and then you do it again until you're at the last layer. The last layer can't be moved but if there are 3 matching and they are at the last layer then the all dissapear. Once there are no more moves left the player score is tallied and must equal something or they lose. Or they have to destroy so many blocks.

Sounds like the perfect way to overcomplicate a game mechanic whose main appeal is its simplicity.

Take bejewelled, now put a wax wrapper over all the gems.
Now lets say that each wax paper is different shades of color, but you can still see the real color underneath.
Let the player swap but let the swaps be permanent, this means if they swap two gems and nothing is matched they can keep the swap anyways.
When the player matches the wax wrapped gems the wax comes off revealing next layer.
Once all the wrappings are off the gems are no longer swappable and if you were clever enough to set up the match then they are destroyed and you get an uber bonus.
You dont need to do that though, as purely matching will give you score.
THe object is to clear so many per level. Once you run out of moves its over, or time, or whatever.

You may find yourself enjoying Glow Worm (http://forums.indiegamer.com/showthread.php?t=2947), which, incidentally, made it into the IGF finals for Innovation in Visual Art (http://forums.indiegamer.com/showthread.php?t=5377)...for some reason.

The thing with these ideas is that you don't know whether they'll work until you actually try them out. So, throw together a prototype and test the idea. I have often had gameplay ideas that sounded great in theory that simply didn't work or weren't any fun in practice. Only a prototype will tell...

Leper, one of the powerups in Atomixer (atoms marked with a biohazard 'mutation' icon) does precisely that. When matched, it shifts colour so you have to seek out atoms with the new colour. Depending on the colour level, the player may need to do it up to 9 times.
