I'm planning on making 3rd person shooter with both indoor and outdoor maps
like max payne. So far I'm thinking of Ogre3D or RealmForge GDK.
RealmForge got more features but Ogre3D got bigger
community and it looks more neat.

which one do you recommend?

which one do you recommend? I suspect Gamedev.net (http://www.gamedev.net/) would be a more appropriate place for you right now. This forum is for game development professionals, and you seem to be just starting out.

it might also be worth looking at the Torque engine from garage games.

not sure if this is the sort of thing your looking to make but http://www.fpscreator.com/ might be a useful engine, esp if your new to the game making scene

Depending on if you want to match the graphics level of Max Payne and your experience level, check out the Cat Mother engine. It was an engine used by a commercial company that released it when they closed shop. You can get it at http://catmother.sourceforge.net/. It uses a BSD license, and it has a fully working demo with the content GPL licensed to learn from.

If you are new to 3d game development, start smaller. If not, use Torque.

3d indie games rarely get finished -- there's just too much work that goes into finishing one. But if you are just doing it to learn about 3D, Torque may be too complex.

But seriously, if you don't have a solid 3d background, make something smaller first.

Please... someone... tell me he's kidding. I mean... he IS kidding, right?

To quote Ricardo C from about five months ago:

Sonicron, what's your development experience? I thought you were working on your first game. Have you worked in the industry in any other capacity?

game development professionals...

Play nice, will ya?

@kjs:

As for the question at hand... I can't say anything about RealmForge, but I've used Ogre3D pretty extensively and think it is quite a friendly engine to use. The community is fantastic and the WIKI is full to the top with good info for beginners.

One note about Ogre -- it isn't a game engine, it's a rendering engine... so prepare yourself to NOT use it for input, sound, etc.

I have some experience with Ogre 3D and unless thing s have changed their forums were not as active as Iwould have liked. Monitor the forums of the various products for a couple of weeks to get an idea what kind of questions are being asked and how long it takes to get a response.

Off topic: If this is your first game you should really think about doing something smaller first.

Please... someone... tell me he's kidding. I mean... he IS kidding, right?...game development professionals... Play nice, will ya? Make of it what you will, but working in a professional capacity on my first stand-alone game qualifies me to make certain judgments that see through, "I'm planning on making 3rd person shooter...like max payne," as nothing more than a beginner with little, if any, experience.

I have been programming for some 16 years, writing music for 12, and doing graphic design for 10, not to mention the some 4 or 5 Quake 1/2 mods that I created and released, a couple of which reached cult status and spawned similar gameplay styles in professional games, such as the DarkMatch mode found in Unreal titles and the multiplayer mode in Alien vs. Predator.

I fail to see how this guy's question is any different than the multitudes of, "I want 2 maek a game like halflife 2 taht will pwn j00!" that have been casually pruned from the tree of Indiegamer over the months. So, before you encourage me to "Play nice," I urge you to consider the bigger picture. First title or not, I'm doing it as a full-time professional and taking actions to further a potential career in this business, which is why you won't find me asking silly questions like, "Which game engine should I use?"

Seems a great product for a Indie who can't program his 3D engine but wants to make FPS's nonetheless.

Hi all!
I forgot to explain my situation in the first post,..
I've finished making a simple 3rd person shooter with only C++ and DX SDK.
(some codes from a book that I read, the game was pretty crap tho..)

In the end I decided to use Yake game engine because it's got all I need in it.
I'm planning to release my game about two years later, maybe I will need to also
promote the engine while making the actual game.
FPSCreator doesn't appeal to me since it's like other normal game creators.
eg. RPGMaker
