UPDATED Nov. 1, 2007

Asorson Studios is now Allied Studios, and we are open for business!

As you may know from visiting our website I took a hiatus this year to backpack the Pacific Crest Trail. I left the Mexican border on April 24 and arrived at the Canadian border Sept 29. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. If you are interested in reading about my journey or seeing photos I’ve set up an online website dedicated to my trip: www.erikasorson.com/pct (http://www.erikasorson.com/pct)

Now that I’m back I am once again looking to the future and how to provide the best quality artwork and highest level of service possible to individuals and companies in need of contract art services. Our company has grown in five years from a one-man operation into a closely knit network of artists from around the world working on multiple projects across multiple genres. To better reflect their contribution and the nature of our business model the company name has been changed to Allied Studios.

We have implemented several new policy changes in 2007 that will allow us to better serve the needs of our clients and associates. The most significant of these is we will be switching from a flat-rate billing model to an hourly billing model. This will allow us the flexibility needed to take on larger projects as well as manage multiple projects more effectively. Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page for more information: www.allied-studios.com/faq.html. If you have any more questions I will be happy to answer them.

Thanks for your time and I hope you will continue to consider us for your business. For more information about Allied Studios, samples of our work, past projects and client testimonials please visit our website listed below. I've uploaded some new work from recent projects to the end of this thread.

If there is anything you need, or if you have any questions feel free to email. Initial consultations are free.
Thanks for your consideration and best of luck to everyone with your projects!

Sincerely,

Erik Asorson
Director of Development

I appreciate that your sample pictures are not from Indie games, but could you give us a rough guide to what the sample pieces would cost an Indie?

Erik Asorson
11-30-2005, 12:45 PM
Actually, the first two images are both from indie games! I can't post prices here because they are always fluctuating, depending on several factors relating to the project itself, our current availibility, etc. However, I will be happy to provide a custom price quote to anyone. Just email me and tell me about your project and the art assets you need. I will usually respond the same day. We often offer discounts to indie developers up to 60% if your project looks interesting.

Kudos. I work as an artist, too, and I apreciate quality when I see it. :)

Honestly, if anyone is going to post their portfolio here, they are clearly marketing toward indie-developers. If someone is marketing to indie-developers, then I'd say its likely that they wouldn't charge "AAA" prices :) Just my humble opinion that I bet they charge reasonabley.

Erik Asorson

Our prices are very reasonable, but they are not cheap. If you are working on a shoestring budget you probably won't be able to afford us. However if you have a decent sized art budget for an indie game (in the thousands) then there are several ways which we can work with you to develop artwork that is visually impressive, but represents a minimum of labor and expense. First off, we offer up to 60% discount across the board to qualifying indie developers. I consider it an investment into the community, a community which I believe holds the future of game development.

But, as anyone who is familiar with video game development knows, CG artwork is not cheap. Most mainstream games have an art budget in the millions, even simple cellphone games and portable games have an art budget in the hundred-thousands or high ten-thousands. For an indie game to stand out graphically you're going to need to have an art budget at least in the thousands, and possibly in the low ten-thousands.

Keep in mind though that good artwork is designed to pay for itself and increase profits in the long run. The impact of high quality artwork can instantly boost your game out of the "minor leagues" in the eyes of the consumer. The first thing potential customers see are your screenshots, your box art, and your game logo. Long before they download your demo or even read the text blurb that accompanies your game they will have made up their mind on whether it's a professional quality game or an amateur attempt just by looking at it. This is where we come in, helping to make that all-important first impression.

Well it's actually a different game genre. Wild West Billy is the sequel of our previous game Hangman The Wild West: Billy's Adventure (http://www.e-funsoft.com/hangman).. :D

Thanks for the kind words Mark. We're not THAT expensive. I don't think a lottery win would be required, usually a small business loan will suffice ;)

Great stuff you got there!.

Quick question: are those zorro and jedis 3d rendered sprites or hand made pixel art? its hard to tell the difference! great technique!

Erik Asorson

The Zorro and Star Wars sprites are 3d-rendered. We can produce both 3d-rendered and traditional Pixel artwork for 2d games.

Erik, just wondering: Your prices are pretty much at the top of the pricing guide you posted a while back? The reason I ask is because I was also thinking tht your would be very expensive.

Hi Sean. Thanks for your question. I try to avoid any direct comparison of hourly rates because they can be misleading. An hourly rate is only half of the equation, the other half being the amount of labor required to complete the job, which is in no way standardized. Our flat-rates are often less than what you would pay someone less capable for the same body of work because we work efficiently and identify opportunities to minimize labor and expense within a project without taking a major hit to quality. On top of this inherent savings we offer a 50% Indie Developer discount which brings our prices down to the mid-range of the pay spectrum so we can provide "high end" artwork at a "medium range" price.

This is really good quality game artwork. I'm loving the harpy and of course the sprites... always a special place in my heart for sprite animations. Keep posting the eye candy!

Those fish look great. For one of my 3D screensavers I should be in a need for 50 fish. They don`t have to be of 50 types, there could be 2-5 (texture variations) per mesh. How much would it cost me ? A range is enough.

EDIT : Sorted out through PM.

Erik:
Have you ever thought of making things for the Daz3D/Poser or Renderosity community?

The reason I ask is it looks like it is very profitable for the artists and I was wondering if this is the case.

Erik Asorson

Davaris,

I have in the past considered creating stock models, but what I really enjoy doing is custom artwork for clients. I do have a large library of stock assets, created over the years for my own personal use, which I may release someday, but for now my focus is on doing commissioned work.

This stuff looks very nice. My art budgets fairly small, but I think if I have the cash to do Starship Tycoon 2 I might well be a customer.

I just thought I'd pipe in with a word of support for Erik. He did a sailor model for me, and delivered it promptly and to spec. It will add a very professional feel to my Indie game, and challenge the rest of my work to match his standards.
