Short and straight to the point:
I found a very nice email checking tool -> http://www.poptray.org

Long version:
After releasing my first game, I find myself so addicted to checking email that I have to check it every 10 minutes in case there's a new sale or other business related mail.

I used to be able to check only twice a day, but now I can't help myself and of course my productivity is worse for it.

I open Outlook Express and close it so many times a day that I thought a simple tray app should help.

So I searched for one and found PopTray which is very nice (http://www.poptray.org).

Now I don't have to open Outlook Express all the time and I can just look at the tray icon to see if there are any new mails instead. It doesn't do any popups/notifications to interrupt your concentration, it just shows the number of new emails on the tray icon. Very neat.

This is a very good application, and I highly recommend it, as well. However, be warned: I had mine set to check every minute. This was fine for about a week (and quite helpful!), then I wasn't able to connect to the pop servers at all, through the program or my email client. Either the servers (I was checking three different ones), or my ISP, was blocking the connections, probably suspecting I was a malicious bot. After closing the program, the problem was resolved in around 24 hours. Just be aware that checking too often can get you temporarily (or perhaps permanently) banned from your email host or those ports.

Any reason you can't just leave outlook open and watch your task bar for a little envelope graphic appearing, why would you need to shut down/reopen the app all the time ?

If your server is running CPanel, you have to check every 10 mins or so only, otherwise you could be blocked for an hour (default setting on CPanel, but can be disabled by root/admin user).

Taskbar space and RAM.

If you only have one account, or multiple accounts and don't mind all the mail going into one inbox, you can use Outlook 2003 - does the same thing and minimizes to the system tray. If you are like me and have a ton of accounts and want each to do to each own inbox.... (Mozilla Thunderbird), you'll have to use simething like this until Thunderbird can minimize to the system tray.

I'm using mozilla thunderbird, I launch it once and it checks the mail every few minutes, If you get some mail a nice icon appears in the tray, put your mouse over the icon for info about the mails, double click it to go to the appropiate inbox.
