Do you live in the United States? Do you want to buy me lunch? VGsmart is coming to YOU.

Sure, we'll be in a moving truck... sure, we won't really be showing as often as we'd like....but if your city is on our route then we will gladly stop on by (Lunch is optional).

If you live on the following route, drop me an e-mail or post a message and I will attempt to time driving through your area at a "reasonable hour."

from Waldo FL to Talahassee FL
Talahassee to Montgomery Alabama
Montgomery AL to Birmingham AL
Anywhere on I-20 between Birmingham and Dallas TX
I-35 between Dalas and Oaklahoma City
I-40 Between Oaklahoma City and Bakersfield, CA
I-5 Between Bakersfield, CA and Corvallis, OR

And there it is... the grand plan to move west. Oh, and this will all be going on sometime around Sept 25.

Make sure you play the Oregon Trail game beforehand for the case you get mobbed by Indians or alligators or what not. :)

Bah, my idea got Vetoed by the president (my wife). She doesn't want to spend an extra 20 hours on the road by going through Ca and instead wants to tackle the mountains through I-80 (has been through there? Is it hard to drive?)

Here's our new route, which will shave 20 hours off our drive and 500 miles (and about 100 dollars in gas or more)

From Birmingham, AL to Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City to Witchita, KS
Witchita, KS to Denver, CO
Denver, CO to Salt Lake City, UT
SLC to Boisie, ID
Boisie, ID to Portland, OR
Portland, OR to Corvallis, OR

Note #2: This trip is turning into a nightmare. It is expensive, time consuming, and very stressful.

I moved out here (to Seattle from Indiana), and took I-90. It was kinda hairy for the mountain stretch in idaho, but I drove it around xmas (snow), and at night, and while it was snowing.

Honestly, if you drive that stretch during the day before snow season, it shouldn't be too bad. Not sure what you're driving (big moving truck?), but I'd just take it slow and steady and you'll be fine.

Good luck w/ the move.

Yeah. I see things really go badly in VGSmart if Joe must travel for a free lunch. :)

Saying seriously (as seriously as possible in such topic) I'm really sorry you don't make your route through my tiny town Joe. I'd propose three free lunches to you. May be next time? ;)

Good luck with the moving!

A few things to remember when driving a truck. And by truck I mean something larger than an SUV.

- Use your gears to maintain your speed, not your brakes. Brakes fade very fast on a heavily loaded truck.
- Use the air-brake or engine brake if you have one.
- Go down a hill at the same speed you climbed it. So if you had to climb the hill in first gear, decend the hill in first gear.

I have done this part of the drive:

Kansas to Denver, CO
Denver, CO to Salt Lake City, UT
SLC to Boisie, ID
Boisie, ID to Portland, OR

Not a bad drive although it was a long time ago (1988)
and I wasn't driving a large truck....
The Kansas section is pretty boring but the Rockies and
Columbia River Gorge sections are beautiful.

I highly recommend spending as little time as possible in Wichita, KS.

I've driven along I-80 from SLC, UT to Evanston, WY a number of times and once from SLC, UT to Omaha, NE. The drive across the plains was fairly monotonous, but the drive through the rockies is beautiful, senic and the grades aren't too step for a moving van (or truck).

There are certainly worse roads through the rockies, such as US 6. About a month ago a truck carrying explosives on that road overturned, caught fire, and exploded leaving a 70 foot by 30 foot deep crater in the road. It took crews around three days to fill in the hole in and repair the road (see story here (http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=92793)).

What's your expected travel time? 4 - 5 days? more? Good Luck with the trip!

Joe, if you're in Eugene, Oregon on the weekend of Oct 7-9th, stop by and say hi to the indie developers going to IndieGamesCon. If you're driving through Eugene before then, stop by the GarageGames office.

By the way, my wife and I did the Miami, FL to Eugene, OR move a while ago. Actually we left miami the day before a hurricane hit... that was crazy... trying to outrun a storm.
