Alawar Entertainment (http://www.alawar.com) has released Sum-It-Up, a fast-paced, math-oriented puzzle game in which the player links tiles with numbers on them in an effort to match the total the computer provides.
In Sum-It-Up, the player connects neighboring tiles with the aim of matching totals that appear on the left side of the screen. Tiles can be linked horizontally or vertically, and the player has a limited amount of time to generate the total before a burning tile appears. Like the popular Bejeweled games, if a burning tile reaches the bottom of the screen, the game is over, so the wise player includes the fiery chips in his or her chains.
Fortunately, the bigger the number the computer provides, the more time the player has to generate the total. Also, bonus tiles the player can use to chalk up high scores randomly appear on the playing board. Include a gold tile in a chain, for example, and you’ll get the cash register ringing with bonus points. Score high enough, and your name will be included in Sum-It-Up’s Hall of Fame.
As in math class, a little cleverness goes a long way. For instance, the player gains more points the fewer titles he or she uses, which comes in handy when multipliers begin appearing. (Who ever thought learning to multiply could help someone win a game?)
Each match starts with the player in First Grade and becomes more quickly paced as he or she reaches higher levels. Sum-It-Up aims to help young players with their math skills so that when then computer provides larger totals to generate, they’ll be prepared for the challenge.
