View Full Version : How about a Design Forum

We've got a biz forum, and a technical forum, but nothing really aimed at design. I can't figure out whether to post my design question in General Chat, Indie Basics, or what. Seems like there'd be enough interest to make a Design forum worthwhile...

Whoops - I see the Game Development and Technical subhead suggests it for design questions too. But it seems like that's mostly a programmer's forum, and not all designers are programmers (though I am). I still think breaking Design into it's own forum would be a good idea.

I think of the "technical forum" as the area to talk about making games (as opposed to selling games) and post design questions there.
Saying honestly I'd send away all programmers from these forums. (You are welcome to start a flame now guys :D )
Saying seriously though I vote for separated Design Forum. To dig up fun and useful things in all that technical issues is a pain for me. I also suppose that lack of good design is exactly the problem of most of good developers - I suppose some of you should know for sure what I mean.

I agree, as long as you convince the Tetris guy to participate ;)

I agree, good structure is good.

Are you referring to game(play) design, or visual design?
The two are incredibly different, and yet both very relevant to people here...

Are you referring to game(play) design, or visual design? I can't speak for Phil, but I think there'd be place for both of them.

I give thumbs up to a game design forum. I don't care for the majority of the programming posts, but I do care to hear about and discuss actual game design issues. The two are certainly very different (as is visual design, of course).
One big idea, though the traffic in each would be sparse, would be to split technical into all the major fields of game development: design, art, sound (and music), programming... um, and whatever else there is. After all, just because there aren't a lot of discussions of sound effects doesn't mean that they should be lumped into some other category and get lost.
(caveat: I always do the All New Posts button, so none of this has any effect on me... but I think it would encourage more posts specific to those disciplines, at least a little)

I think we do need a place to discus design of games. But I don't think we need a new or separate place. I would rather rename "Game Development & Technical" to be just "Game Development" as the current description describes.

Don't forget a Web Design forum Guys! (Then again, would that come under visual design or programming design (I mean a lot of guys program their sites in pure DHTML etc so.........tho' not a game, programming still requires a design.........hmmmmmm tricky!!)) :p
All the best

I'd love to see a game design dedicated forum also. I think we all focus too much on pure technical problems...we certainly aren't short of those, it'd be nice to have a place to talk purely about improving gameplay and fun.

All joking aside!!! :D
I would also like to see a dedicated forum just for the art of game design, because without a design you have no game!! :)
Besides I for one would love to hear the inner workings of Mr J.C.Smith,Steve(aka Svero),Mike and any other successes.(You guys KNOW who I'm talking about). :D
And also throw my 2 cents in now and again!!
Kudos to you all
Mark.

I have been reading this thread from the beginning, and I noticed some people were not posting in the right threads in the first place, so that's why I'm going to also vote an AYE to contemplating a restructure to make things easier to use. For example, the Business forum gets the most posts right now and a lot of the threads there would be better placed in other forums, such as technical questions. A design forum would also be a great idea, as I have posted some of the first art design questions and that topic turned out to be pretty popular. A new Game Design Forum for art and Gameplay design would be great. Remember, we don't have a category for Gameplay and we don't have a category for art, except the Technical forum.

Yeah, a seperate forum could be nice. Maybe a poll can be conducted to get quantitative result. Phil, can you start the poll?
I regularly look for threads to discuss design especially the artwork. I think such a forum will attact people and encourage us to share ideas. I think that would be fun and productive.

It's a good idea, so it has been added.
Enjoy :-)

Uh! I'm embarrassed :o . Felt like it was for my sake having Retro64's post just after mine. I have to post now :)

I moved several design related topics out of “Game Development & Technical” and into the new “Game Design” form. I am sure I could find more if I went further back into the archives but I am not sure how much value there is in that. But don’t hesitate to let me know if you think some other topics should be moved. I didn’t search for them in “General Chat” or anywhere else.
